US wants India to stop oil imports from Iran by November

Washington, Jun 27 (PTI): The US has asked all countries, including India, to stop all oil imports from Iran by November as it ruled out any exemption to India and Indian companies from its reimposed Iranian sanctions regime.

"On China and India, yes, certainly," a state department official told reporters when asked if the US has told all countries, including India and China, to stop all their imports of Iranian oil by November 4.

He said Indian and Chinese companies would be subject to the same sanctions as those in other countries. Given the huge energy needs, India and China are major importers of Iranian oil.

"Their (India and China) companies will be subject to the same sanctions that everybody else's are if they engage in those sectors of the economy that are sanctionable, where there were sanctions imposed prior to 2015. And yes, we will certainly be requesting that their oil imports go to zero. Without question," the state department official said on condition of anonymity.

Responding to questions, the official said these countries should start reducing the import of oil from Iran now and bring it to zero by November 4. "Without question, they should be reduced. That's what we've been telling them in our bilateral meetings. They should be preparing, now, to go to zero (by November 4)," the official
said.

The official said this is part of the Trump administration's effort to isolate streams of Iranian funding and are looking to highlight the totality of Iran's malign behaviour across the region.

"We remain engaged with the EU-3 throughout this process, and we are going to continue to branch out in new countries and reach new partners as the weeks go forward," the official said.

As such, this could emerge as a major topic of discussion between India and the US during the first 2+2 dialogue next week. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman would be in the US next week for talks with their American counterparts Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary James Mattis.

The State Department asserted that there would be no waivers under the new sanctions regime. "I would be hesitant to say 'zero waivers ever'. I think the predisposition would be, 'No, we're not granting waivers'," the official said.

Noting that America's allies are aware of its concern, the official claimed these countries want to work with the US. "I don't want to get into the substance of each discussion I've had, but, for a vast majority of countries, they are willing to adhere and support our approach to this because they also view it as a threat. And it's gotten worse since 2015, not better, on their regional activity side," the official said.

In a recent report, the bipartisan Congressional Research Service (CRS) said as international sanctions on Iran increased in 2010-2013, India sought to preserve its longstanding ties with Iran while cooperating with the sanctions regime.

In 2010, the Reserve Bank of India ceased using a Tehran-based regional body, the Asian Clearing Union, to handle transactions with Iran. In January 2012, Iran agreed to accept India's local currency, the rupee, to settle nearly half of its sales to India.

"During 2011-2015, India reduced its purchases of Iranian oil-at some cost to its own development-in order to receive from the US administration exemptions from sanctions. India has increased oil purchases from Iran to nearly pre-2012 levels after sanctions were lifted, and in May 2016 India agreed to transfer to Iran about USD 6.5 billion that it owed for Iranian oil shipments but which was held up for payment due to sanctions," the report said.

"India's position has generally been that it will only enforce sanctions authorised by UN Security Council resolutions, rendering it likely that India will resist US efforts to compel it to comply with reimposed US sanctions such as those that mandate cuts in oil purchases from Iran," said the CRS report.

Iran has been afriend of India for a very long time. Even during those decades when US was supporting Pakistan and criticizing India Iran was our friend. A friend in need is a friend indeed. So, unless it is a sanction by UN India should not bow to any pressure by US and Sudi Arabia who might take Pakistan's side any time they choose.

America is the biggest ROBBER STATE in world politics. Doesn't which party Republican or Democratic....actually the US is bankrupt due to their over consumption and hedonistic lifestyle. They exist only because of their military. If their military is starved of funds, they will disappear. But theie Federal Reserve takes the problem out by printing notes although they are bankrupt. Unfortunately for some reason everyone is dollar hungry.

    Indira Gandhi worth?

We were small agri land holders prior to 1974... She introduced land reform act... We lost some land... We didn't get any financial amount... In the course we got some land ownership and we had to pay some amount for government!

Recently I was trying to analyze what was impact on our family...my grand parents were pushed to poverty due to that act... It was mind less mad work by late prime minister...

Some people got land but they have kept barren.. Results are in front of me...

You are saying she was worth something!

This eradicated a large % of landless and bonded labor.
All know the result -there were some side effects but majority of poor slaves were freed.

    it was a masterstroke.
and she was killed for not letting Punjab be a separate nation .
you are sad that your family lost some land. But what if India had lost its wheat bowl-Punjab?

Shri, And i have no doubt how your family came about to own such huge properties by dubious means. The land reforms act was a step in the right direction. Lots of tillers of the land were marginalised & ill treated . Mrs Indira Gandhi was a powerful ruler . She rightfully allied with the soviet union & put the U.S & the U.K in a spot . She was known as the Iron Lady . What has Feku achieved with his Foreign jaunts. failure in Nepal , failure in U.S , dishing out loans in Nepal & Bangladesh, nothing to show after spending huge amount in foreign trips . U.S. A has so much power over the rest of the world .The U.N tells as the U.S does. Remember Iraq , the U.S went ahead with the invasion inspite of the U.N asking them to restrain. Imagine if there are sanctions because of Iran, Feku will bring Indias Economy to shambles .

No no.. Land was cheap earlier...
Our family bought agri land legally from earnings hard working and no single paise came from any bhagya...
All the transactions registered in Karkala sub registrar office in 1919 and 1936.. and I have required documents!... These land reforms should have done in more organized way and not for vote bank purpose....
For example... Person doing agri for two given land...
If it person doing agri for 20 years that would be ok....

    Adding more to the above:-
Banks are liberal to give loans to these land holders who got land from land reform act..
All these are NPAs... These people spend money just like drinking and never repay...
Now see the bank NPA and more fun...
Do you think people work ? And anyway farm loan waiver will be there for co operative banks! How nice 😁

Iran's economy, currency value, local business, medical needs all have gone to dogs.
People are on verge of creating popular revolution against the government. Traders are crying and to add to such critical junctures, Iran cannot drift further. They cannot survive without oil revenue and more over, they always remained in good relations with India and vice versa. But Mr. Trump is a hard shell which cannot be broken easily. Whatsoever, it's a bad development for India.

Somebody please drill some brains in the skull of those who are involved in import of Oil products, US Oil Import is proving costly due to damages caused to their drilling apparatus by weather pattern (i.e. hurricanes). Somebody who may have read this on TOI please let the readers know in detail. I can't, due to time constraint.

US is not pressurizing India to buy oil out of charity motives. Iran or Gulf oil will be much more cheaper especially because of closer proximity than US if not weather related issues.
