Mangaluru: Gurpur Bridge closed for two hours for inspection, traffic diverted

Mangaluru, Jun 28: Restrictions have been imposed on movement of traffic in major bridge across the Phalguni in Gurpur for two hours following emergency inspection by the officials on Thursday June 28.

The restrictions for vehicular traffic will be for two hours from 5am to 10am.

The commuters will have to take Vamanjoor-Pachanady-Bondel-Kavoor-Bajpe-Kaikamba route. Those vehicles coming from Kaikamba to Mangaluru direction too can opt for the same route.

The inspection will be done to examine the bottom of the bridge by the public Works Department officials and National Highways division and civil engineering experts.

The inspection comes in the wake of collapse of another bridge across the Phalguni in Mularpatna on Monday.

    He is No.1 MP. But in Delhi, Hindi mai bolna padta hai. You need some charishma to wiggle things out in your favor from BJP inner circle. I doubt Nalinanna has what it takes to make Giant Gadkari dance to his tunes.
    Gurpur Bridge was there when my Grandfather was a school going kid. It has lived its life and a replacement is needed urgently. Luckily we now have an alternate route (which also involves crossing bridge) to Airport. Else, the traffic on this bridge would have been humongous.

    As usual, why wait till last minute? I can see the river raging below due to heavy monsoons, and lives of those workers are in jeopardy. This should have been done during lean period when the river is bone dry.

    Hi Sarjii may b our govt is looking some BALI for Gurpura bridge. Now folks we have to take one day strike regarding new 4 lane Bridge construction. After that not awaking our govt, then further step. Politicians Please leave ur internal politics, try to construct Gurpura and Kuloor new bridges for Humanitarian ground

    It is very sorry state of affairs in Dakshina Kannada district which contributes significant share of taxes to both state and central government.

    Our elected representatives are not effective when it comes to implementing basic infrastructure needs.

    No proper bustand in Mangaluru for private buses, no fire station in northern part of Mangaluru. Also no public grounds in different parts of city. More trains from Mangaluru to Kerala rather than Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka.

    This bridge was constructed my grand fathers time around 1915 completed work around 1920 now nearly 100years.... this is the only road which is connect directly to moodbedre...... our muncipality and minister's are sleeping till it falls..... only taking taking and blaming no funds ....there is lot of funds which not lifted by the minister's which lying with state government...... Mr nalin is only interested in Kambala ... korikatta.....kola.. nema...etc... I am staying near by this bridge... i know the difficulty we are facing...
    Pl use that fund and do some work as fast as possible...

    You are right one of my relatives house is moobabidri..every time a pass.through this bridge risk bridge collapsing comes into my mind.All people should unite for.this irrespective of the differences we have regarding parties we support..
    Ultimately we should knw that whenever a damage is caused,it will be to people who are amomgst us..ministers and MLA's Will be safe.

    Yes exactly, will the concerned authorities utilise the money fully on constructing the public utility services like bridges etc?
    Yes people will unite irrespective of caste, creed, religion, rich, poor.. Arrange for signature campaign, organise dharnas/ strikes etc. On seeing such protests, government will allot money. Half of the money will go into the pockets of the officers. As, a result "kalape kaamagaari" takes place. Our efforts and govts fund just vanish like a flood water.

    Gurupura bridge was built during the British rule. It nearly 100 year old. Its days are numbered. No plans for new bridge either by the state or central government.

    A bridge that connects many cities, communities, families, schools , businesses and now disconnects because of PWD's timely inaction.

    It took PWD to act on Gurpur bridge to inspect with collapse of another bridge, Mularpatna. Does this dept, have check list if at all they have carried out inspection any time on Mularpatna bridge ? If they are not done, and if it is their responsibility they would be held accountable and responsible for the collapse. Why does this dept exists with all resources and equipments?

    authorities finally taken the interest to inspect the bridge. in 100 years we could not develop 2 way vehicle movement on a earlier airport route, road leading to the city and now connecting 2 taluks.
    with all the technology and resources we could not develop a 100 year old bridge to modern standards? what was the long wait for , for it to go down ? kindly inspect all the bridges in and around the city limits. with the amount of rainfall most of them are in a bad shape.

    This bridge is an example of 'Two Silly Goats' poem. However, if two buses come to face to face, unlike the goats, they have to end up in the river as they cannot let one cross above the other.

    Good that the authorities have waken up at-least now, after the collapse of one of the bridges on the river.

    Inspect inspect and take action as early as possible. Rains have just begun. Even take precautionary methods towards kulur bridge.

    Inspection should have been taken place before monsoon.

    Searching the place when pants are ready to stink.
