Puttur: 8-year-old swimmer Monya Kausumi grabs medals in first nationals

Puttur, Jun 28: Eight-year-old Monya Kausumi, a swimmer from Puttur Aquatic Club, created waves by winning silver and a bronze medal in her very first ever national meet. At the 35th sub junior and junior National Aquatic Championship at Pune, Monya won a bronze in 4x50 medley relay and silver in the 4x 50 metres freestyle relay. In the freestyle relay, she pulled the Karnataka team from 4the place to 2nd by her personal best timing of 33.6 seconds.

Earlier this month, Monya impressed everyone when she won silver in 50 freestyle at the Sub junior and Junior State Aquatic Championship held at Mysuru. With this she qualified for the nationals.



Monya is the youngest swimmer from Puttur Aquatic club to win a national medal with just two years of swimming. Monya is a 4th standard student of St Philomena English Medium School, Puttur.

She is trained by coaches Partha Varanashi, Niroop, Rohit and Sathya at Dr Shivarama Karantha Balawana Swimming Pool, Puttur. She is the daughter of Kamal and Rahani.
