Swiss Bank deposits info will be available as of 2018: Goyal

New Delhi, Jun 29 (IANS): Data of money deposited by Indians in Swiss banks will be available to the government under an agreement signed with Switzerland for automatic exchange of information, Interim Finance Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday.

The agreement for automatic exchange of information was signed between Switzerland and India last November under which both countries would start collecting data in accordance with the global standards in 2018 and exchange it from 2019, Goyal told reporters here on the sidelines of an Institute of Cost Accountants of India event.

He was responding to media questions on latest data released by the Swiss National Bank showing a rise in Indian deposits last year.

"Under an agreement signed by the Modi government with Switzerland, all this data from the period January 1, 2018, will be made available to us," Goyal said.

"From what I understand (from media reports) 40 per cent increase in foreign remittances are on account of the Reserve Bank's Liberalised Remittance Scheme brought during the previous (UPA) government under which a resident Indian can remit $250,000 per year," he said.

"Then there are also non-resident deposits in this. Rest assured, if there is any wrongdoing revealed, we will take action. With the various measures of this government against black money, Swiss bank deposits have been decreasing," he added.

The data showed that after falling for three years in succession, money parked by Indians in Swiss banks rose 50 per cent to Swiss Franc 1.02 billion in 2017 over the previous year.

Over the last three years among the measures taken by the Indian government to combat black money include the enactment of Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015, the Income Declaration Scheme in 2016 and the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana last year.

Its Good that information from the swiss bank will be shared with Indian Govt.
This could have been done much earlier. Wonder why it didnt happen all these years?
As to whether the money is white or black, that can be easily known once the details are shared.
If somebody thinks, just because the money is in Swiss, its black..then they are living in a fools paradise.

Swiss banks are known for their secrecy and confidentiality and they never provided the details of their customers in the past. They were forced to relax the rules by the US authorities once terrorism related money laundering came to light. Recent Panama papers forced their neighbours like UK to relax their rules further. Moreover on directions of the Supreme Court, India had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe cases of alleged black money of Indians, including funds stashed abroad in places like Switzerland. Indian government was forced to do so after all. I agree with you that all money in Swiss Bank is surely not black money.

Well done BJP, Amit Shah and Narendra Modi. Black money has gone up by 50% just in four years. Indeed, what congress could do in 60 years, you did just in four years. Good going. May God save this country from you people in 2019.

Really I am laughing on Central government plan for 2019 election. 4 and half year nothing done, only losses and increasing gas and petrol, economy down, lost job, no vacancies. Now in 5 month they want to show people of India that we are near to full fill our promise. People of India must understand central government drama otherwise people will bi in big trouble.

Mr. Goyal, you do not need to give any clarification regarding black money and the details please. We are hearing this from Feku Maharaj since 4 years and for your information, he actually promised to bring all black money from abroad and deposit 15 lacs each to every Indian citizens. I did not get that so far unless these blind bhakths got it, including my share, that black money still not entered India though Chaiwala made 3 round trips to the world so far. We can understand your problems and we have patience to wait for another 50 years for our 15 lacs which will be given to us once the ship containing black money arrives in India. The ship loaded with too much that it might take 50 years for it to reach Indian shores from Switzerland which is a country land locked with its 3 good neighbours. Thanks for updating though.

M Ashwin, It sems like Mr Modi has spoken directly to you. I have not got any link so far where Mr Modi says he will bring back black money and deposit the same to evry Indians Account. He said if we we bring Black money stashed abroad every India could benefit by 15 lakhs. It bring a sense on enormity of Black money. The steps taken on against Black money is much visible.
