Bengaluru, Jun 30: The BJP executive which met here on Friday June 29, has decided to appoint former minister, Kota Srinivas Poojary, as the leader of the opposition in legislative council. The party took this decision after carefully considering regional representation and caste equations.
There was tussle for this position between Poojary and Arun Shahapur. Finally, Srinivas Poojary got the nod on the basis of regional calculations and caste consideration, it is learnt. Sources said that Poojary's name got more support as legislative assembly already has a Lingayat as opposition leader in the form of Yeddyurappa, and giving another position to Lingayat leader, Shahapur, was not thought to be proper.
The executive meeting also decided to appoint Mahantesh Kavatagimath, who represents local bodies constituency, Belagavi, in the council, as the chief whip of the council.
