Mangaluru Jul 2: “You need to build your own brand when you start your first job or venture for which you need to work hard,” advised Zebraa Works New Delhi CEO Aparna Jain.

Jain was speaking on topic ‘Own It: What women do and what we should be doing' during the Mother Aloysia endowment lecture here at St Agnes college on Monday July 2, jointly organised by St Agnes College and The Ethel Prabhu foundation .

“Whenever you sketch a business plan there will be lot of resources available around. Make sure that you are aware about the need gap in the market and start thinking big. When you start a new job or venture, you need to build your own brand for which you need to work hard and show great dedication in your work,” she said.

“In your workplace you find two types of people with perpetuating stereotypes. One tries to act cute and shy and another who acts like the grandmother of the organisation. There is a need you become serious about your profession, stand out and speak up,” she said.

"Build your network, start communicating with the people. Girls hesitate to speak but try to communicate with the people and build the network. Start conversation with the people to get it going,” advised Jain.

"Biggest problem about women is they don’t have their own money. So start taking control of your finances. If required take advice from financial advisors and start saving money from your first job itself and invest the money,” she said.

“The dangers of corporate world are harassment, gender bias. If we find something is wrong, which is against the law, stand up and speak up so that you will be on the safer side. If one maintains silence it encourages the harassers and such behavior continues in the work place,” she added.

The Ethel Prabhu entrepreneur award consisting of Rs 50,000 was conferred on Shilpa a renowned woman entrepreneur who runs a mobile canteen 'Halli Mane'.

Speaking after receiving the award, Shilpa said," It feels great to receive this award. I never thought that this mobile canteen would be so famous. I am thankful to all who supported me through out in reaching this success".

Founder of Ethel Prabhu foundation Amith Prabhu, Principal of St Agnes College Sr Dr Jeswina, Joint secretary St Agnes College Sr Maria Roopa, Vice principal of the college Sr Dr Venissa and others were present.
