Mangaluru, Jul 11: A short story depicting immorality, justifying that illicit relationship is normal was part of the text book for B Com students of Mangalore University. As the book created heated controversy, the university has withdrawn the book.
The story titled 'Maguvina Thande' (father of a child), written by Mattara Vittala Hegde was included in Kannada text book for B Com third semester. There were allegations that few lines in the story reflected that illicit relationship was normal. There were fears that the story might have adverse impact on the students and many people had demanded for the withdrawal of the book.
ABVP state vice- president Keshava Bangera who opposed the book had said that the story was published in a book titled 'Antarangada Kathe' in 1940. “What is the purpose of including the story in the present text book?” he had asked.
"The story states that extramarital affairs should be the subject to debate with changing times. What is the purpose of including such story it in the degree course?” Keshava Bangera had asked opposing the book.
As the story was being widely discussed in social media, the university woke up and withdrew the book.
The registrar of the university, in a news release, stated that the book has been withdrawn.
