Former UK ambassador to US attacked in London

London, Jul 12 (IANS): Christopher Meyer, the former British ambassador to the US, was attacked at a station in London, with two teenagers arrested on suspicion of assault, police said on Thursday.

The 74-year-old former diplomat was left with heavily swollen eyes, a split lip and a suspected broken nose after the attack at the Victoria Station on Wednesday, reports the Guardian.

A 16-year-old boy from Hillingdon, west London, and a 15-year-old girl from Croydon, south London, were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. They have been released under investigation.

Meyer is being treated at St Mary's hospital in Paddington.

The police said his injuries were not life threatening.

"I'm absolutely shocked by the level of the brutality. They really beat him. It's appalling - like something you would see in a war zone," the diplomat's wife told the media.

"The police told me they believe that it is more likely that they might have wanted to rob him. Nothing was taken..." she added.

Meyer served as the ambassador to the US from 1997 to 2003.
