TN CM condoles death of Ramanuja Mutt chief


Chennai, Jul 12 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Thursday condoled the passing away of Sri Ranga Narayana Jeeyar, the 50th pontiff of Sri Ramanuja Mutt in Srirangam.

He was the Jeeyar (head) at Sri Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam, about 330 km from here.

In a statement issued here, Palaniswami condoled the death of the pontiff, saying that he was grieved on hearing the news.

Sri Ranga Narayana Jeeyar, 88, passed away on Wednesday in a private hospital in Tiruchirappalli, about 350 km from here. He was unwell from the past week.

The Chief Minister said that the Jeeyar had started his service to God as a priest in a temple in Coimbatore. He became the 50th pontiff of Sri Ramanuja Mutt at the age of 60.
