Two Indian Americans donate Rs 13.5 cr to Tirupati temple

Tirupati, Jul 14 (IANS): Two Indian Americans donated Rs 13.5 crore to the Lord Venkateswara temple here on Saturday.

Ika Ravi and Guthikonda Srinivas, who hail from Andhra Pradesh, donated the money to the temple 'Hundi' and various trusts run by temple authorities.

Ravi, Founder CEO of Rx Advance, a pharmaceutical company based in Boston, donated Rs 10 crore to 'Hundi', while Srinivas, CEO of JCG Technologies, a software development and consulting firm based in Florida, donated Rs 3.50 crore to the trusts.

They met the officials of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the richest Hindu temple in the world, handed over the cheques in the presence of Andhra Pradesh's Industry Minister Amarnath Reddy. The Minister lauded the gesture of the NRIs.

Thousands of devotees, who visit the hill shrine every day, make their offerings in 'Hundi' while some devotees make their donations online. TTD runs several trusts engaged in social, religious, literary and educational activities.

According to TTD officials, the temple's earnings during 2018-19 are expected to be Rs 2,894 crore, of which the offerings in temple 'Hundi' are likely to be Rs 1,156 crore.

    No sense in donating to wealthy temples. Does Tirupati Devasthanam has any Charitable Projects in other states? I am not aware. There are millions of Indians languishing in Poverty in all states. So, apportion these donations for charities and spread the message of "Sharing & Caring". If it is centered only in the base state, the authorities need to look with a wider spectrum.

    how come the non-hindu temples do not have to give any accounts to the govt?

    This is completely partial, Nowadays, central government scan whatever comes to instistutions that belongs to minorities from abroad , however , they don't restrict any Hindu institutions

    The donation of Rs 13.5 crore to Tirupati temple by two Indian Americans is mind-blowing. I hope it is rightly utilized for a good cause. These donors did what was right on their part and now the temple authorities should do what is best.

    It is about time to bring in an annual Wealth Tax on all religious institutions which do not pay income taxes. That way, instead of enriching government coffers the temples and churches can feed the poor and support them in many different ways and deduct these expenditures from taxes payable..

    It's about time that earnings (including all donations) of all religious institutions are taxed. There is no reason why they should be exempt from paying taxes. Religion is something that is being misused by a lot of people in our country mostly for tax avoidance purposes and they make more money than any other business!!!

    There are people have thousands of crores .. .... and give crores to temples politicins..... but poor die with hungry and they want give even for cremation..
    What is the use of such richness.....
    We have seen two years before man waking with wifs dead body and qutari man sends money to help that poor man........ but our ambani Adani2...not even turned to help ...
