Make teaching of mother-tongue compulsory in school: Naidu

New Delhi, Jul 15 (IANS): Lauding language as an embodiment of morals, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday appealed all state governments to include teaching of mother tongue as a mandatory subject in school.

Addressing the Andhra Education Society on its Founder's Day here, he stressed that language embodies the culture, values, morals and traditional knowledge.

According to a statement issued by office, Naidu said: "One can learn as many languages as one can, but never (should) neglect their mother tongue. That is why preservation of language is essential to conserve the broader cultural aspects of a civilization."

The Vice President said that culture of a region represents its "civilization, ethos, wisdom, morals, customs and social norms" and respect for each others' language and culture will "strengthen the unity and integrity of India".

Naidu also hailed Durgabhai Deshmukh - a freedom fighter whose birth anniversary the society celebrates as its Founder's Day - for her pioneering work in women's education.

"... she was an inspiration for every one as a freedom fighter, lawyer, social worker, educationist and politician... was instrumental in setting up of many hospitals, colleges, nursing homes and vocational centres for women," he said.

Deshmukh recognised the importance of education for women to overcome many problems, he added.
