Baby selling scandal: Maneka Gandhi orders inspection into Missionaries of Charity shelter homes

New Delhi, Jul 17 (HT): Minister of Women and Child Development Maneka Sanjay Gandhi has directed state governments to inspect all child care homes run by Missionaries of Charity (MC) across the country.

On July 5, the Jharkhand Police had arrested a nun and an employee of a Ranchi-based organisation run by the Missionaries of Charity on charges of selling a baby allegedly for Rs 1.2 lakh.

The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint by the Ranchi unit of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Following the allegations, the Raghubar Das government has ordered an inquiry into all children’s homes including Nirmal Hriday run by the MC in Jharkhand.

Gandhi has asked the state governments to ensure registration of all child care institutions (CCI) and linking them to the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) within next month, news agency ANI reported.

It is likely Maneka Gandhi understands the root cause of this complaint and the hassles faced by the missionaries who have to go through so much hurdles to bring up a sick homeless child and there are procedural costs involved in such arrangements too which may not have been recorded. The person who complained indirectly causing troubles to the missionaries who are silently doing the work sacrificing their lives for the poor and the downtrodden.

Where was this so called Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi, when children and women across country were being raped and killed. What action she has taken to punish these rapists and murderers most of them belong to her own party Bhalatkari Janara Party (BJP). Does she or her party have courage to close these mission of charities which are doing selfless service for the poor, orphan, distressed. No. they can't. Because they know they can't take care. They are experts in creating false stories and put it in peoples mind to hide their failure of development, failure in controlling the people who are lynching innocent people in the name cow trade, children kidnapping. Hypocrites.

The central government is not bothered about starvation death in Jharkhand but always want to harass Institutions who care for the destitutes, down trodden. if any missionaries help these people, then, conversion issue creeps up.

Time for the missionaries to Charity, to move to African Continent, where they welcome with folded hands.

Nobody asks you to bring babies left on the streets to the Missionaries of charity. Whenever the cops find abandoned children they conveniently bring them to the sisters.

Why bring them there in the first place? why not send them to Maneka Gandhi or to the RSS or Bajrang Dal offices? All problems will be solved then.

As per the news Sr. Konsaliza confessed of selling babies........(that may be genuine news or just police officers making their bosses happy)

however why Menaka cant have a charity homes of these orphans? Why RSS is behind to take back Bharat Ratna from Mother Theresa ??? that is question.....

As per me justice should be there if anyone does wrong things ... that doesn't means for someone's bad doings you cannot punish someone else

It will be very difficult to manage by govt, if all Christian missionaries close their charity, orphan, old age, leprosy center etc. let govt do such job first then start finding fault in others.

..Dont you think already existing laws are not enough..after Nirbhaya case dozens law came, did rapes came down in Delhi or any other place.. what laws will do, unless people mend their ways..dont bring minority majority/religion/caste on rape, lynching cases like politicians & playcard Bollywood celebrities..peoples of every religion, caste creed caught on such cases from Asaram bapu to church priest, madarasa teachers..its social evil, collective efforts needed..this Organisation caught selling babies, there were no record of nearly 200 babies and you think its selected target..

Price of 'secularism ' in India. All temples end up paying money to the Govt and is under Govt vigilance. When it comes to minorities , they are exempted. Is anybody auditing or inspecting these institutions??

Are you really a barrister ? If you were, you would have known that the funds collected from temples is a pittance percentage of the money total collected in them. The pittance income is used to giving salary to the priests, providing services to the pilgrims, celebration of festivals, etc. Let me not start the lecture all over again. The government has given devotees to refrain from contributing to temples' coffers if they distrust about handling the funds. Why donate, and again why complain ?

As for minorities institutions not subjected to such collection, you being a barrister you should have known that all non-Hindu religious institutions are charged like normal man is taxed, without any discount. Their priests are not paid by the government, nor pilgrimage centers are run by government funds.

Please don't pollute the space on DW website with your fake name as well as communal opposition instigating comment.

Half knowledge is dangerous.
There is accounting and auditing of everything in(RC) church run institutions.
But for your kind information children orphaned by parents/children thrown in dustbins etc are taken care of by these church run institution.
they dont do big drama like politicians and dont make money like businessmen.
can you tell if not donations given by public from where will these institutions get money to take care these tens of thousands of children (food/shelter/education/healthcare) etc etc
1 or 2 stray incidents dont blame the entire organisation .its not 70 yrs its more and nothing to do with politics.
fear god -dont make these children homeless-or government take care of them - NOT ON PAPER LIKE JIO -BUT REAL CARE-no more children begging on roads.

Maneka is such a person, that other day in U.P. woman was gangraped by 5 men
and burned alive in Temple, few days back a young Girl returning back after complaining rape was raped again in M.P. but no word from Maneka. Such person is this Maneka. People will understand her true self.
In the universe, missionaries of charity is among the safest, so she want to
attack them, even on frivolous or most rarest rare charges.

Can anyone imagine the kind of her deterrent action? Instead of taking action of perpetrators, she started to action on the shelter homes run by missionaries that are among the safest in the entire universe! Other day she was having apprehensions about women safety in Karnataka but not in U.P. & M.P. !!! What's happening can you imagine?
Real threat to women and children in India is through this action of Maneka Gandhi!

It is easy to blame but who will do the work and bear costs for the maintenance of such girls with confidentiality of their identity?? Who will look after these kids born out of wedlock or illegal merital status or by rapes?? Until when?? and who will settle them into societies??
On the other hand, one of such thing might have happened in one centre, since all are human beings and good and bad always there. However, it dosen't mean everything collapsed if something unusual somehow happened due to the greed of one or this may have been planted to defame the Missionaries of Charity! who knows?? Lets not assume but get the facts right.

Well If these facts were known well before why didn't the RSS and the Menana gang build old age homes,serve the lepers,the homeless,the sick, homeless kids, schizophrenic etc...if the RSS has funds for weapons and crores for sinister activities they should on top priority rehabilitate all those who are in the missionary homes in their refuge...make life simple for us and use their 4 crores plus chaddi gang to treat these poor people....it's that simple

I would advise the Missionaries of Charity to close down all their homes in India, so that they don't have to face any harassment by the right wing run governments. There are countries across Africa where the governments are literally begging them to come and take care of the orphans and destitutes there. Therefore why waste time on ungrateful people.

Missionaries of Charity have actually stopped giving children for adoption from their shelter. They continue to raise the abandoned children, educate them and put them into some suitable income earning so that they will find a match (from one of the orphanages) and start a normal life.

When it comes to parents of a unwed girl who plead the nuns to shelter her until she delivers, because only other way left is abortion, the nuns without option, accept her out of compassion for a life inside her that took life without a choice.

BJP government had put certain restrictions to which the nuns were not agreeing. The nuns thought stopping adoption centers is a better option than succumbing to the pressure.

Sometime ago when Maneka's ministry had changed the adoption rules, the Missionaries of Charity mentioned that, due to the contradiction between Maneka's rules and their religious belief, they would stop some activities in certain areas.

Naturally, Maneka was furious. But she did not get far.

Now an opportunity has presented itself. So Maneka is all out to take her revenge.

The BIMARU-Guj belt lacks education. It is not likely to change in the next 100 years.

Maneka is not bothered about thousands of children born out of rape, whom parents want to hush-up without filing a case. Once the child is born, they want to get rid of it, and let their daughter start a new life. Who will pay for the expenses till the child is born ? The parents of the girl ? Why ?? In such cases the nuns arrange couples secretly to adopt the baby and claims the cost from them. Well, the nuns did not get the girls pregnant so that they sell the baby - did they ?

I've read the charges claimed to be Rs. 50,000/- which is reasonable, if she did not have to give birth in a government hospital. To keep it a secret the delivery must be in a private nursing home.

Can Maneka take pain and shelter such girls, ensure confidential delivery and adopt the children ? When she can't. and advises government funds, well, she should first put a stop to rape on single girls. We know this is impossible. Let the parents of raped daughters handle the matter in a way they finds it suitable.
