Bengaluru, Jul 17: Deputy chief minister, Dr G Parameshwar, who also happens to be the state home minister, said that the state government has decided to crack down on the drugs cartel in the city and elsewhere in the state which has been threatening to grow into a major challenge. He asked senior police officers to draft a proper action plan including the formation of anti drugs squad and other measures.

The proposed action plan would include specific plans to stop ganja from being grown in the state and sealing influx of the drug from neighbouring states. Totally regulating their sale near schools and colleges in the state and stopping young students from falling prey to drugs will also be one of the major aims of the plan. It should provide pans to spread social awareness about the drugs, duly drawing support from non-government organizations and departmental officials, the minister explained.

Parameshwar noted that cooperation of departments like education, excise etc would be required to effectively curtail the problem of drugs. In his meeting with officials of connected departments, he stated that the government is determined to crush the drugs cartel and therefore wanted the action plan to be complete, far-sighted and integrated.

Towards this end, the minister came up with the suggestion that the anti drugs unit functioning under criminal investigation department should be strengthened by infusing more personnel and improving quality of their training. He also wanted anti drug units working in every police station to be more proactive in discharging their duties. He also wanted the police concerned to be held responsible if drugs trade proliferates under their jurisdiction, and to post strict officers to control the drug trafficking in such places.
