Udupi: Four child labourers from West Bengal working as goldsmiths rescued

Udupi, Jul 18: Four child labourers have been rescued by the Department of Labour and the Department of Women and Child Welfare Udupi officials following complaints by the locals here on Wednesday July 18.

The children hailing from West Bengal were working as goldsmiths in a building near Chittaranjan Circle in Udupi.

The children have been sent to the custody of district child welfare committee.



During the raid it was revealed that more than 15 people who hail from West Bengal are running businesses without trade licences.

A report regarding the same will be submitted to the DC soon.

The raid was carried out by Ramamurthy SS, labour inspector, Prabhakar Acharya, director of women and child welfare committee, Praveen Kumar, labour department official and the team.

It is said that some chemicals used by these goldsmiths to melt the gold is dangerous for the health of child labourers when they are exposed to it for longer hours.

    I strongly feel this department which works as child labour rescue has to be stopped and that money shall be used for the betterment of the children. At least few children will stand on their own feet. Than feeding these useless department officials. As a lay man I can show them at least 100 child labourers working in Karnataka. They can contact me.

    Government has to find ways not to push these young ones into work. They will never take action to stop this. In this case I feel at least the children could have learnt a skill which will be useful for their future. The chemicals used for melting Gold is bad even for adults....!!!!????

    I do not understand the logic of this raid and rescue operation. Government failed to provide jobs or unemployment allowance, hence people send their children to work to support the family.
    What happens after sending the children to Child welfare center? Does any newspaper or TV channel report the status of welfare centers? i never read anything till now.
    If any child found working, the authorities should send them to school, and evaluate the condition of their parents, they may be sick, may not have food to eat, are they taking car of the parents of rescued children or the responsibility finishes after the raid.
    If you cannot do good to the children, then please do not raid or rescue !

    All Goldsmiths in undivided south canara district have passed through this stage when young. They learn the skills in young ages by working as helpers with experienced goldsmiths and simultaneously understanding the art.
    This can not be treated as child labour. In fact they are getting prepared for a self employment which can help them earn their livelihood later.

    Every time we read the report stating child labourers are Rescued. If the government provide enough facility to the needy i don't think any child will work, its the sad state of their families which force them to work. Now after Rescuing them can government provide them decent food, shelter and clothing?

    Rescued .. and then what.. live them to beg on streets... this is what our country does... they are not allowed to work and fill their stomach neither they are provided with sufficient facility to live life like a normal human being..

    Why should it be the responsibility of the government to rescue or rehabilitate the children in the nation ? That too at tax-payers' cost ? What for their parents are ? Just to give birth ? Or, get them to work at a tender age and bring home the wages so that they can be fed ?

    First time I disagree with your comment!
    When stomach is empty, people don't see what is right and what is wrong. Tax payers money is also wasted for publicity and foreign trips without any benefit to the country. Tax payers money is also spent to subsidize food to elected member of parliament and ministers.
    What I believe is these poor children's welfare ( food, clothing and education) should be given priority and rest all should go to the bottom of the list.
