Goods train derails in Amethi, disrupts rail traffic


Lucknow, Jul 24 (IANS): A wagon of a goods train derailed on the Varanasi-Lucknow route late on Monday night near Akbarganj railway station in Amethi, the police said on Tuesday, adding many trains have been diverted and some cancelled.

The rail track was repaired in the morning.

Railway officials said the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) reached the spot and directed the officials to ensure speedy removal of the wagon so that the track could be cleared.

LTT Express was stopped as the 51st wagon of the goods train carrying coal went off the tracks and dragged on for about a kilometre causing damage to a portion of the tracks. The train was bound for Lucknow from Varanasi, an official told IANS.

Varuna Express and Lucknow-Sultanpur LKM passenger train have been cancelled. The trains that have been diverted include 3414 Ganga-Jamuna Express, 12238 Begumpura Express, 13257 Jansadharan Express and 22419 Suhaildev Express.

Officials said that the derailment could have been due to "loose shunting". A probe has been initiated.
