Mangaluru, Jul 26: Childhood and teenage are memorable times in each person’s life. However, for Clevan Sheldon D'Souza (24) a resident of Pavoor in Harekala, his childhood was filled with pain due to his health issues. The same continued in teenage.
Right from birth, Clevan suffered from congenital heart disease and imperforate anus. He was unable to pass stools, and doctors had to make an alternative hole on the right side of his stomach. He had many corrective surgeries at Father Muller’s Hospital, throughout his childhood to fix the rectum issue.
While many children his age spent time playing, Clevan’s first four years went under observation at various hospitals.
Clevan who also had congenital heart issues was admitted at Manipal Heart Foundation in Bengaluru for a surgery in 1999. The surgery only saved his life but the health problems continued. His parents Charles and Zeeta Irine D’Souza took utmost care of him. In spite of weak financial conditions, they made efforts to collect money from their friends, relatives and financial centres in the form of loans. They have spent in lacs till now. They sold all their assets for the treatment of their only son,
In the year 2002, at the age of eight, Clevan had to also undergo an open heart surgery. When they were hopeful that Clevan would recover, he fell ill again and doctors suggested doing Angiogram with immediate effect. After the Angiogram, they suggested monthly check up and lifelong medicines. This came as a shock for Clevan’s parents. They faced difficulties in arranging money for tickets to Bengaluru for Clevan’s checkups.
Manipal Heart Foundation Surgeon Dr Deviprasad Shetty who came to know about the family’s financial conditions, suggested monthly check up at K S Hegde Hospital, Deralakatte. Now Clevan is under the observation of Dr K Subramanya. As a part of treatment, both doctors have suggested lifelong medicines for Clevan. Without these medicines, it is very difficult to save Clevan‘s life.
However, after years of treatment, Clevan’s parent’s financial condition is in a very bad state. Beside this, they have to repay loans they borrowed from many others for treatment. Now for medicines and check up of their son, they need Rs 8000 every month. But at present, it is difficult for them to arrange this amount.
“My son does not know what is going on with him. He wants to become normal like other youth. He always expresses his desires and wishes without knowing his health problems. Being parents it is not right to tell others how we have spent for his health. But now it is our necessity. We want to see our son alive. Long term medicines can only save his life. But with no resources, we cannot buy these medicines," says Zeeta, mother of Clevan.
Dear readers, Clevan and his parents need your help. Financially they are standing in zero position. Still, they have tremendous hope in Daijiworld readers. The family needs at least Rs 8,000 per month for treatment, and continuous medication.
Let us join hands to help this family smile again.
