Madikeri: Car tumbles into Harangi canal - four from single family perish

Madikeri, Aug 7: After a car carrying members of a single family jumped into Harangi right bank canal, four persons of a family from Napoklu near Madikeri lost their lives on Monday August 6. The accident happened near Mantikoppalu village in Periyapatna taluk, Mysuru district.

The deceased were Palaniswamy (45), Sanjukumari (35), Poornima (19) and Likhit (15), all from Napoklu village. The family members had visited Doddakamaravalli post office in Periyapatna taluk via Kushalnagar and then moving towards their land located in Lakshmipura village near Chanakal when the accident happened.

The family had land in Lakshmipura village in Bettadapura revenue division, Periyapatna, and had settled down in Napoklu since a decade. Palaniswamy worked as mason at Napoklu, and his children, Poornima and Likhit, were differently-abled. The family collected the pension for which the differently abled persons were eligible from Doddakamaravalli post office, and going to their land when the car went out of control of Palaniswamy, who was driving the car near Mantikoppalu village on Koppa - Ramanathpura connecting road.

After falling down into the canal, the car was dragged away for some distance by the force of water. All the four were suffocated to death. Fire brigade personnel and police, who reached the spot, brought out the car and mortal remains of those inside it with great difficulty. Bettadapura police registered a case. The bodies were handed over to the family after conducting post-mortem examination at the mortuary of the community health centre at Kushalnagar.
