Mangaluru, Aug 9: Rainfall in Dakshina Kannada district, which had become feeble since the last some days, picked up some momentum on Wednesday August 8. Several places recorded some rainfall. Most of the places reported having experienced cloudy atmosphere, chilly weather and drizzle throughout the day. The drizzle has given rise to fresh hope in the minds of farmers.
District administration sources said that water level in Netravati and Kumaradhara rivers stood at 18 metres at Uppinangadi, while River Netravati was flowing at a height of four metres at Bantwal. The levels further rose since Wednesday evening.
At the same time, sources said that water level at Uppinangadi rose on account of heavy rains received in Western Ghats. As the news about sudden spurt of water levels in Netravati and Kumaradhara rivers spread, people in large numbers rushed to Uppinangadi to the confluence of these two rivers there as the two rivers meeting one another in front of Lord Sahasralingeshwara temple there is deemed to be a holy phenomenon.
As these rivers overflowed, water rushed to low-lying areas and many agricultural fields were inundated. Subramanya and surrounding areas are experiencing floods and Darpanateertha, a tributary of River Kumaradhara too is in spate. The bathing bay at Subramanya went under water.
The bridge at Hosmath near Subramanya went underwater on account of heavy rains, affecting traffic.
Train services disrupted
Due to heavy rain in Western Ghats, a huge boulder got deposited on the railway tracks on Mangaluru-Bengaluru line near Yedakumeri. This incident happened as landslide occurred in a hill at Kodagaravalli at Shiribagilu near Yedakumeri. This spot is located about 65 km away from Nettarana railway station, and the incident affected train movement.
After the boulder and huge mound of mud got deposited on the track at around 7.30 am on Wednesday, railway staff went to work. As huge earth has fallen next to the tracks, the night Mangaluru-Bengaluru train service is likely to be affected.
The Karwar express train coming to Mangaluru from Bengaluru was culminated at Sakleshpur station at 10.30 am. The passengers were sent by nine buses hired from KSRTC.
