Centre declares Kerala floods as 'calamity of severe nature'

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS): The central government has declared the devastating Kerala floods as a "calamity of severe nature".

A statement on Monday by Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said that "keeping in view the intensity and magnitude of the floods in Kerala, the government of India has declared this a calamity of a severe nature".

Naidu and Mahajan said they had decided to donate their one month's salary for relief and rehabilitation in Kerala and appealed to all MPs to try donating one month's salary too.

Kerala has been hit hard by the worst floods in a century, leaving hundreds dead and thousands displaced and homeless.

Naidu and Mahajan also said that under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), an MP could in the event of a calamity of severe nature in any part of the country, recommend works up to a maximum of Rs 1 crore for affected districts.

"Calamity of Severe Nature" is no more a slogan but a reality to the people of Kerala where it is estimated that nearly a million people have been directly impacted. Death of nearly 400 people so far, and displacement of several hundreds of thousands of people have a direct impact on themselves and all those that are directly and indirectly related to them. Loss of homes and belongings also bring so many unimaginable problems including mental and physical stress.

The "calamity of severe nature" therefore is an impact on everyone who is concerned with Kerala and the tremendous loss the people have suffered. This is the hour for India to rise to the occasion and give whatever possible help that is available.

So many parts of the world have suffered and suffering from the most unexpected climatic changes that have brought fires, floods and much more. God is our best hope and support.
