Mangaluru, Aug 28: Drug abuse is much more dangerous than stealing, goondaism, murder, robbery and terrorism. It is silently kills youth, said assistant commissioner of police Uday Nayak.

He was addressing students of St Agnes PU College at a drug awareness programme.

“Many students pursuing their studies in Mangaluru are quite far from their parents. Some take to alcoholism and drug abuse following depression. If a student once falls into the trap of drug abuse, it is very difficult to come out of the trap following which their future and family life and social life is ruined. If they are caught by police, then they may be imprisoned, fined or may find difficulty in getting a passport too. As a result, they may find it difficult to get a government job too,” he said.

In his message, forensic expert Dr Mahabalesh Shetty said that drug abuse makes a person lose his mental balance besides destroying his or her mental as well as physical ability.

Journalist Mohammed Arif said that it is not possible to ban cigarettes and alcohol overnight as both are multibillion industries. Only self-control would help in solving the problem to some extent. He sought cooperation of all in this regard.
