5 soldiers killed, 10 injured in Kenya blast


Lamu (Kenya), Aug 29 (IANS): At least five Kenyan soldiers were killed and 10 seriously injured in a blast in Kenya's Lamu region early on Wednesday, officials said.

Kenya Defence Force (KDF) spokesman Paul Njuguna confirmed the incident which took place at around 8 a.m.

The incident took place after the soldiers, who were on a humanitarian civil assignment to fetch and distribute water to the residents, hit an improvised explosive device (IED) planted in the Lamu area, Xinhua quoted Njuguna as saying.

The IED is suspected to have been planted by al-Shabab militants, a Somali militant group which continues to wreak havoc in the region.
