Margao, Oct 21: Scrap yards which are mushrooming in Ponda, will face closure soon as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Jayant Tari has ordered nine scrap yards to close with immediate effect.

Ponda taluka widely known for temples attracts flocks of tourist every year. People here were concerned about rising number of scrap yards in this area. People allege that these scrap yards are operated without any legal permission, hence they create nuisance to the public.

Taking the cognizance of this matter, Tari has issued order to the owner saying that if they failed to implement the injunction order then they will be closed by the mamlatdar in the presence of police.

According to sources, Ponda PI had filed 23 cases against the owner of the scrap yards. After hearing these cases SDM passed an injunction order under section 142 of the criminal procedure code (CrPC).

Dumping of acids-like substances in these scrap yards create nuisance and no one has control on them. Administration should come down heavily on them and give relief to public, said Rajendra Gawade, resident of Ponda.
