Poovamma makes Mangaluru proud, wins gold in relay at Asian Games

Mangaluru, Aug 31: Poovamma from here has won gold for the women's 4x400 metres relay at the 18th edition of Asian Games being held in Indonesia.

As the achievement of the sports star was beamed, Poovamma's family erupted in joy and exulted in the sports star's success by distributing sweets. Her father, Raju, mother, Janaki, younger brother, Manju, and younger sister, Likhita, felt fortunate enough to witness on television the stupendous performance of Poovamma who has made India proud.

A number of people called the family over phone to congratulate the family members on this achievement. The Indian women's 4x400 metres relay team comprising Poovamma from Karnataka, Rima Das, Saritaben Gayakwad and V Vismaya covered the distance in 3.28.72 seconds and succeeded in annexing the gold medal.

The gold that Poovamma bagged comes on the back of silver that she won in the 4x400 metre in the newly introduced mixed relay event at the on-going Asian Games Indonesian capital on Tuesday.
