Rape accused bishop seeks Pope's consent to step down temporarily

Jalandhar, Sep 17(DC): Bishop Franco Mulakkal, of the Jalandhar diocese, accused of raping a Kerala nun, has written a letter to the Pope seeking permission to temporarily step down from the responsibilities of the diocese.

In his letter to the Pope on September 16, Bishop Mulakkal mentioned that he is taking this step as he needs time to concentrate on the police case against him following allegations.

He also stated that he will have to spend more time in connection with the case and will also have to travel to Kerala several times.

Amid mounting pressure to initiate action against Bishop Mulakkal, Kottayam Police has summoned him for interrogation over his alleged involvement in raping and having unnatural sex with a Kerala nun repeatedly between 2014 and 2016.

The nun, in her late 40s, has also sought immediate intervention of the Vatican for justice and demanded removal of Bishop Mulakkal.

The nun has questioned why the church was "closing its eyes to the truth" when she had mustered courage to make her case public. She alleged that Bishop Mulakkal was using "political and money power" to "bury" the case against him.

The bishop however, has said there were "several contradictions" in the evidences collected by the police against him. "I leave everything into the hand of God as I await the result of the findings of the team probing the allegation," he said in a note to the diocese. Earlier he had dismissed the nun's allegations as "baseless and concocted", insisting she levelled those as the catholic order had rejected her demand for "favours."

Bishop Mulakkal last week had handed over his administrative responsibility of Jalandhar diocese to a senior priest.

Who is wrong, the investigation will tell. But this nun needs to be questioned why she kept quiet for 4 years and now come out in public? If it was so, she should have immediately approached the Superior of the convent she belongs to. She is come out only when she was transferred. So she should be questioned till the truth comes out.

So let us pray, that both are questioned by the law exist in our country and also from the law of the church. Until then, saying anything against anyone make no sense.

My request to Catholics, let us not quote the messages from our Holy Bible. Instead let us pray that the truth comes out and henceforth no one go against the commitment to Christ. God bless.

I am amazed about the sway of the media over people.

Merely because there is a hysterical demand from the media and some people, many are inclined to believe that a person is guilty of some wrongdoing.

What if the accused is completely innocent?

I have said from the very beginning that the nun, the accuser, must be given a lie detector test.

According to the Supreme Court over 80% of the cases with sexual crime accusations turn out to be false. This case too might be in that 80% bracket.

I do not normally ever quote the Bible - but, for Christians, there is a clear guideline:

Matthew 7:2 "For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you."

For a nun, to come out and make such an allegation is really impossible unless she has undergone through that trauma of rape!

Please do not bring the bible and Mathews here.
The topic is not worth it.
Using the holy books to infer and deduce solutions in such cases is the most ridiculous thing to do.

If he is an anointed priest and bishop, what about the nun? Don't you think she too is anointed and a servant of the Lord?

This Mukkaal Bishop has thrown so much muck on the churches ,that he
    better step down permanently.
One should learn to listen to the inner voice of conscience and make it a habit
If that dies due to non hearing then no use.
What temporary here after statements not expected from the position he was in

"One should learn to listen to the inner voice of conscience and make it a habit"
Sir, Rapist Franco did exactly the same. He didn't care for his God, he didn't mind if it was a sin, he didn't mind that he will put everyone in shame... he just followed his inner voice!!
