Day after bail in Bahraich case, Kafeel Khan held in fraud case

Lucknow, Sep 24 (NIE): A day after suspended paediatrician of BRD Medical College Hospital Dr Kafeel Khan was arrested by Bahraich police for allegedly creating nuisance at the district hospital and later granted bail, Gorakhpur police on Sunday arrested him and his brother for allegedly opening a bank account in a nationalised bank using fake documents.

Police said the accused had made transaction of Rs 2 crore through the account opened in 2009.

After the arrest, Dr Kafeel and his elder brother Adeel Ahmed were produced before a local court that sent them to judicial custody, said Additional Superintendent of Police, City (Gorakhpur) Vinay Kumar Singh.

According to Singh, in July this year, a local resident Mudassar Alam filed an FIR at Cantonment police station alleging that Adeel and his associate, Mohammad Faizan, opened a bank account in Faizan’s name using his photograph.

Adeel and Faizan were charged under IPC sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security) and 471 (Using as genuine a forged document), said police.

“During investigation, police found that the driver’s license which was used as ID proof was fake. The address of account holder mentioned in the bank records was not found to be of Faizan’s either,” said Singh. “As per bank record, the introducer and guarantor is Adeel Ahmed, a businessman. The probe also revealed that transaction of Rs 2 crore was done through the same account.”

“Police also found a bank draft was prepared from the same bank account to pay medical education fees of Dr Kafeel Khan at Manipal University,” added Singh. “Since Dr Kafeel was also beneficiary of the account, he was also made an accused and arrested. Alam’s statement was recorded before magistrate who also held Dr Kafeel responsible.”

Faizan, he said, is abroad so police would issue notice to him to join the investigation.

Cantonment police station station house officer (SHO) Ravi Kumar Rai said, “Adeel had moved Allahabad High Court seeking arrest stay in the case but was turned down. Adeel’s SLP in the Supreme Court has also been rejected.”

Dr Kafeel Khan’s family could not be contacted for comment.

On Saturday Bahraich police arrested Dr Kafeel Khan and two others. They were accused of questioning the families of the patients in the paediatric department without obtaining permission from the hospital authorities, which created problems in the ward. They also allegedly misbehaved with hospital staff.

Police booked Kafeel and others under CrPC section 151 (breach of peace). They were later granted bail.

Kafeel was earlier arrested in September last year following deaths of around 30 children over two days in August last year at the BRD Medical College. The kids had allegedly died of disruption in the oxygen supply in August 2017. In April this year, Kafeel got bail.
