Mangaluru: Two men who helped woman in distress get beaten up by police

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Sep 26: Two men were beaten up by police attached to Mangaluru town police (Kankanady) here at Jyothi on September 25 after they helped a woman who was in trouble.

It is said that two men namely Jobin and Varghese, residents of Kadaba and Shiradi respectively were in the city to visit their uncle who has been hospitalised.

Jobin and Varghese alleged that on September 25, when the duo was on their way to the hospital near Jyothi circle after finishing their dinner, a woman sought help from them to connect to a phone number she had received on her mobile phone. Showing humanitarian gesture, the duo extended help. Just then, four men came in an auto rickshaw and attacked Jobin and Varghese.

Both Jobin and Varghese were told by the four men that they were policemen. Later, they took Jobin and Varghese to Mangaluru town police station. They were stripped and beaten up.

They duo also alleged that the police took their purse and ATM card and questioned them for an hour at the police station. After snatching their wallet and ATM card, they were sent back from the police station. Jobin and Varghese reached the hotel room with torn clothes.

Confusion led to thrashing?

According to sources, a woman hailing from Manjeshwar was brought to Mangaluru for prostitution and was harassed by some men. Family members of the woman who came to know about the incident had complained to Mangaluru town police station regarding the same.

Acting on the complaint, the police with the help of the woman, began to investigate the case.

In order to trap the people who allegedly harassed the woman, the policemen boarded an auto rickshaw in search of the accused. The woman called the person who was harassing here. The person who was changing locations frequently, was asked by the woman to meet her near a private hospital near Jyothi.

The woman lost the man’s number in her mobile phone due to some confusion. Meanwhile, Jobin and Varghese, were at Jyothi circle. The woman asked the two to help her find the number on her mobile phone.

The police, assuming that Jobin and Varghese are the one who harassed the woman, started beating the duo up without asking any questions.

After the incident, several people gathered at the police station and protested against the uncalled behaviour of the police personnel. Inspectors Ravish Nayak and Maruthi Nayak visited the police station and bought the situation under control. Meanwhile, the police agreed to their mistake of attacking and asked for compromise. But the protesters did not bow down and demanded the suspension of officers at fault and also asked the inspectors to submit a report to police commissioner regarding the incident.

The Policemen should have questioned both the men and woman before taking any drastic action. On the prima-facie it looks the fault is from the policemen. If this is the case the needy and genuine people will not get any help from anyone just because these type of treatment by the Police personnel. The humanitarian value is vanishing nowadays.

OUR MANGALORE POLICE PERSONNEL NEED FRESH TRAINING FROM EXPERTS .

THEY ARE GOOD POLICE BUT NEED TO DEVELOP TECHNOLOGICALLY LIKE DUBAI POLICE,SCOTTLAND POLICE IN HANDLING CRIME CASES ACCURATELY RATHER THAN CONFUSION LIKE IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE QUESTIONING SOME INNOCENT PEOPLE. THE POLICE COMMISIONER SHOULD TAKE INITIATIVE ON THIS.

Anybody who remembers the Church attack case will know how the police ill-treated the innocent boys & tortured them.

They only supported the criminals & jailed the innocents, they entered the Church & beat up everyone there.

Very shameful incident. Black spot on Mangalore. The police are giving Mangalore a very bad name & are a disgrace to the uniform they are wearing. Suspension is not enough, they need to be dismissed from service with a criminal case filed against them. Pathetic situation. Animals.

It's high time that we start raising our voices against people who are in power(Police) and take action before enquiry. They have no rights to beat up people just because they are police. This attitude will discourage the general public from helping victims in need. It's high time that police need extensive training on people friendly crime prevention and how to handle crime situations. strict action should be taken against these Police personnel's for their negligence and torturing people.

Irresponsible policemen must be taken to task. Must be punished with suspension, fine and to bear the losses incurred by the two boys, whom the said police beat without ascertaining facts. This infact questions the selection process and training of police personnel.

Amazing is the word. This is the caliber of our police department. First beat them up, irrespective of innocence. Can you return the torcher and beating you gave? I suggest both should file a suit and claim damages in crores to bring the department to their heels. High time they learn how to treat innocent and treat real criminals. I will not be surprised, if they salute the criminals and share the booty with them and beat up the innocent. Disgusting.

Such a loathly and untenable incident! Deeply troubled by the fact that the police who once brought peace and security to the society are now instilling fear and panic. If fringe groups cause such untoward incidents, we can approach the police but if the police themselves are cause such untoward incidents, who shall we go to?

What's worse is that this incident hasn't taken place in UP but in Jyothi... a place I frequently pass by. This incident can happen to me or to any other ordinary innocent citizen. The police have to not just own up but also give assurance to the public that such an incident will never occur again.

The victims need to be compensated for the agony, humiliation and torture they underwent. If I beat up someone on the street, I will be put behind bars. Similarly, a firm action has to be taken on the erring policemen.

very ashaming act from police. One wrong thing in India from Police is ,first beat a person without asking whether he is a innocent or not like here. Why should they take their vallet and ITM card?victim should take a lawyer and clarify this.Shouldnt let it so.Police should pay them compansation for what they did.

To be frank the current world is 'HELPING SOMEBODY MEANS DIGGING YOUR OWN GRAVE'. In this case mistake by police, else Bajrangdal goons, thousands of vedikay goons and listen if it is a hindu woman and either Muslim or Christian male, then that is the end of Solomana grandy.
I am far away from everything now. Why to give the stick and ask them to beat?

POLICE Word is very meaningful but our Policemen language and brutality is very bad. POLITENESS, OBEDIENCE, LOYALTY, INTEGRITY, COURTESY & EFFICIENCY IS NOT WITH MOST POLICEMEN AS THEIR DUTY TIMINGS ARE LONG SO MOST OF THEM ARE INVOLVED IN CORRUPTION. THEY TREAT ALL PEOPLE WITH SUSPICION. INNOCENT BOYS HAVE BEEN PUNISHED!!!
