Udupi: Transformer blast - UPCL second unit stops power generation

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Sep 27: After a blast occurred in the transformer of second unit of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd's (UPCL) power generation facility at Yellur near Padubidri in the district on Wednesday September 26 morning, the unit stopped functioning.

The incident reportedly happened on account of technical issues in the coal-based power generation unit. As a result, the second unit, which has a capacity of 600 mw, has been shut down. The first unit however, has been generating electricity.

Although the staff were working when the blast occurred, no injuries or loss of lives were reported. The company is said to have suffered huge loss on account of the blast. A proper estimate of the loss can be calculated only after top technical officials visit the site and assess the situation, it is learnt.

UPCL had not generated power between June and August because of good rainfall. In September, the units had begun generation.

Transformer failures are quite common in power stations , people commenting have absolutely no idea about power stations or electrical systems and are targeting anyone and everyone. Pulling out feku cards , asking closure of plants , speculating all sorts of ideas.....find it quite rediculous to read these comments.

I think the power generator here is working on steam run engine (coal based) and not a nuclear powered so no scope for any dangerous substance to effect surrounding area or environment. We can see the chimney and the smoke (carbon dioxide) emanating from the chiming.

It's not a chimney u see fumes from. It's called an NDCT or Natural Draught Cooling Tower and it's not smoke but the steam emanating from warming of cooling water. The tall 275m white and red band structure is called a chimney and generally you will not see any smoke because there is a pollution control equipment called ESP to capture ash and dust particles.

Nuclear power stations are generally not built in any dense populated areas in India. This is a standard coal fired station.

Nothing to worry , relax. It's an electrical system fault, just like a transformer you find on the street side. Haven't you seen that these Transformers sometimes fail.

Coman man, you are right...damage to environment is irreversible.
Specially now the UPCL is in control of Conman of Coal Industries .
Earlier there used to be frequent protest against UPCL, since Conman took over no protests .
People who claim that they will burn the district for some silly issues also quite on this issue . 6137
