Congregational prayers disallowed in Srinagar's Jamia Masjid

Srinagar, Sep 28 (IANS): Authorities on Friday disallowed congregational prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid here by imposing restrictions in the area.

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, who delivers his weekly sermon at the mosque, was placed under house arrest.

Following a separatist-called shutdown in the Kashmir Valley, the authorities took Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik into preventive custody.

The protest was called against the killing of a civilian in Srinagar's Qamarwari area on Thursday in firing when the security forces were laying a cordon.

All shops, public transport, other businesses and educational institutions remained closed in most parts of Srinagar city and other district headquarters of the Kashmir Valley.
