Watch: Puducherry CM gets into drain, cleans it for 'Swachhata Hi Seva’ mission

New Delhi, Oct 2(DC): Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy’s video of stepping inside a drain and cleaning has been widely shared online. The video was posted by the Chief Minster’s official Twitter account. It is part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ movement launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month to generate greater public participation in the cleanliness mission.

In the video, the Congress leader is seen in white clothes and his dhoti hitched up. He is seen extracting muck from a drain. It is in sharp contrast to events where various politicians are cleaning ‘sanitized’ and deliberately littered spots or posing for cameras with gloves and brand new brooms.

A Congress worker on Twitter said, "It's really so glad to see your sincere efforts and dedicated efforts. You became a role model for our Congress party workers sir. God will give you more strength to serve more for our country."

‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ movement was launched by PM Modi for generating greater public participation toward cleanliness to mark the commencement 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi next year.

Remember that photo of Modi sweeping the floor?
A black-and-white photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding a broom and cleaning floor had gone viral. In fact, BJP supporters used this particular picture in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls as a part of their election campaign.
RTI reply has confirmed it's fake/

But here Congress Puducherry CM proved that it is 'Swachhata Hi Seva’.

When Mahatma Gandhi clean the toilet, Can our Prime Minister live on video clean the public toilet?

Excellent work. Keep it up. All Politicians including Modi and Amit Shah should first get into the drain and clean it instead of doing window dressing exercises by sweeping clean roads.

    Sri-elder
I do agree with you (may be first time)!
All such actions are for vote purpose.
Swatch Bharat (public awarenes) does not mean that we must involve in scavengers job too.
Then why munucipality is engaging thrash collectors or sweepers in the street ?

    Some people just disagree.
Have such guys cleaned the gutters or manholes any time. Talking or disagreeing is easy but not practically.
Those days of 60's there was hardly drainage system. Open toilets (90%) and some provision (pits) for the purpose and the scavengers were doing such a worse job. Thank God sanitation/drainage system was introduced. But those days it was the duty of each house hold to clean the toilets personally. I did because it was my duty. But I would not have ventured to enter the public man holes. Some times too dangerous with poisonous gase efeect.

Too much to be involved in such humiliating jobs.
Ok to do other domestic chores or keeping our surroundings clean hygiene. But cleaning or extracting muck from a drain? (Only show off) First of all, let them lend a helping hand to wives in domestic chores.
Also, there are certain people who are meant for such jobs. Let them to it and that is their livelihood. Politicians give one time example and then they will disappear. All eye wash.

sri_elder, Karkala if the CM of Pondicherry does any think what is your problem? That is the problem in India there is no dignity of labour. He is not posing for a photograph like the other Swachh Bharat Abhiyan models (BJP leaders). The CM of Pondicherry as got into the muck to lead by example. Great job Sir.

    Sir,

    Your comments are shocking.

There is no such thing as a dirty job.

There are drains even in the most advanced countries of the world, and people have to clean them.

It is sad that in India the task is assigned to certain communities, and others call it an 'undignified, dirty job'.

If it is so important to clean that cm can pay 500/- each to labour and they can do that...
Cm earns some salary isn't it...

Swach Bharat is more about educating people..

I can see lot of govt school children do not follow swach barath... They eat chocolate and throw wrapper on the way... You believe me... Not small kids.. High school going children.. They also throw lays packs after finishing it 😆 on the way ... Nothing is taught in government schools.. No punishment... Nobody following them..

You have spoken the message in between the line. and agreed about FEKUISM very much visible in Swatch Bharath. If you are saying, the high school students are eat chocolate and throw wrapper on the way... that means the Swatch Bharath is just on papers.

Here, at least the CM who is a father/iconic figure to the State, got down himself inside such a dirty drain and cleaning shows his humility. The message will have a positive impact on the people of Pondichery.
