CPI-M condemns suppression of newspaper

New Delhi, Oct 2 (IANS): The CPI-M on Tuesday denounced the Tripura government's decision to cancel the registration of newspaper "Daily Desharkatha".

"Desharkatha" was a prominent newspaper of Tripura of 40 years standing and was the second largest circulated daily in the state, the Communist Party of India-Marxist said in a statement.

"The District Magistrate of West Tripura has cancelled the registration of the newspaper on flimsy and dubious grounds and consequently the Registrar of Newspapers has also withdrawn the certificate of registration," it said.

"This is a brazen attack on the freedom of the press. It is a sad day that 'Desharkatha' has stopped publication on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti."
