PM Narendra Modi awarded UN's highest environmental honour

New Delhi, Oct 3(DC): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday received the United Nation's highest environmental honour 'Champions of The Earth Award' at a special ceremony in New Delhi.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres presented the award to PM Modi for his exemplary leadership and advocating action on sustainable development and climate change.

Guterres said, "PM Modi recognises climate change poses a direct existential threat to us. He knows what we need to do to avoid a catastrophe. Other leaders also recognise, know and understand, but the difference is that he not only recognises but also acts."

PM Modi was selected in the leadership category for his pioneering work in championing the International Solar Alliance and for his unprecedented pledge to eliminate all single-use plastic in India by 2022, a statement said

Apart from Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron has also been named as the recipient of the prestigious award.

The award was announced on September 26 on the sidelines of 73rd UN General Assembly in New York.

The annual 'Champions of the Earth' prize is awarded to outstanding leaders from government, civil society and the private sector whose actions have had a positive impact on the environment.

    THE PERSON WHO MISEDUCATED YOUNG STUDENTS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE RECEIVES THE AWARD . HE SAID THERE IS NO ACTUAL CLIMATE CHANGE.
    In response to a girl student from the eastern state of Assam, who noted her generation’s concern about climate change, the premier had replied “The climate has not changed. We have changed.”

    In multilingual India, even though the student had asked her question in English and the Hindu nationalist Modi had replied in his preferred Hindi, nothing was lost in translation.

    Modi’s opening reply was reported in the media as: “Climate has not changed. We have changed…our tolerance and habits have changed. If we change then God has built the system in such a way that it can balance on its own.”

    What Modi government can do is reduce high taxes (Central, State + GST) and can contain the price raise. And it's temperory measure to help reduce the burden on farmers, vendors and common man. Rich will not suffer they even mantain more than two veihcles most of the rich house hold.
    By the way, Where in Kankanady you are from ?

    Good initiative and great work by PM to contribute in line with other world Nations to protect our planet Earth from ever increasing greenhouse effect and changing weather pattern which is bringing havoc and unknown natural calamities every year. For tomorrow’s world and well-being of future generation this is the right time to act now.
    Whatsoever, fuel prices will never oblige by all such awards and something need to be done on a priority basis.
    Not to wait for tomorrow/another day.

    Flavian,
    Just one point. Fuel prices are dictated by world markets. Rising fuel prices will probably discourage unnecessary trips which can be easily covered by foot, and thus save energy, reduce pollution from cars, and will contribute to cleaner environment, though just a little bit. I have nothing to say about Modi's UN honour.

    If we go to the UN website, we find that three individuals and three organisations were chosen for the 2018 award:

    * Joan Carling
    * Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods
    * Emmanuel Macron and the Gujju-bhai as one lot for the International Solar Alliance
    * China’s Zhejiang’s Green Rural Revival Programme
    * Cochin International Airport

    Strangely, the Indian report has left out others (although there is a passing mention of Emmanuel Macron buried in the report).

    Shockingly, the Indian report does not mention the Cochin International Airport at all!
