Mangaluru: Coast continues to get good rains - fishermen warned again

Mangaluru, Oct 6: Most parts of the coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district experienced heavy wind coupled with thunder, lightning, and rainfall again on Friday October 5 evening. Artificial floods were created in several low-lying areas, which posed problem for vehicular traffic. Many rural areas suffered power failures.

The city, Puttur, Beltangady, Guruvayanakere, Sullia, Kadaba, Bantwal, Kasargod, Kanyana and various places around them got good rainfall on Friday evening and night. Udupi district also got generous doses of rainfall. Good rain was reported from Kundapur, Brahmavar, Kaup, Karkala, Padubidri, city and surrounding areas during late evening hours.



Bantwal went through an experience of early dusk as thick clouds enveloped the skyline on Friday evening. Power supply continued to be disrupted in both the town and rural areas of the taluk. A huge banyan tree got uprooted at Sangabettu in the taluk, while a falling branch of a tree severed power lines on highway at Rayi.

A common problem reported generally from all over the coast was about slushy water flowing on the road. Rivers including Netravati have turned red, with their water mixed with mud. Extra water was released from Thumbay dam. Dirty water is flowing in River Phalguni too, and the water in the dam meant to supply water to Moodbidri town was allowed to drain away.

The roof of a Daivasthana at Kenchanakere near Kinnigoli broke after a coconut tree got snapped and fell on it.

A release from the meteorological department has warned that wind with a velocity of 32 knots per hour along with heavy rain will lash the district on Saturday. The fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea, and those who are in the sea have been advised to reach the shore at the earliest. It predicted waves to gain a height of 4.5 metres between 11.30 am on October 7 to 11.30 pm on October 8. It said that rains will continue in coastal Karnataka for three more days.

Kodagu district also reported good rainfall on Friday.
