Journalist Nakkheeran Gopal arrested, booked for sedition after TN governor's complaint

Chennai, Oct 9 (IT): Gopal, a Tamil journalist and the editor of Nakkheeran magazine, was arrested Tuesday morning at Chennai airport. Sources say the arrest was based on a complaint from Governor Banwarilal Purohit's office.

Gopal, 59, was booked for sedition under Section 124 A of the Indian Penal Code.

The veteran investigative journalist, who's popularly known as Nakkheeran Gopal, was arrested by a special Chennai Police team at 8.15 am. He was on his way to an event in Pune.

Sources say the complaint that led to Gopal's arrest was about a Nakkheeran magazine article on the Nirmala Devi case.

The Nirmala Devi case involves a college teacher's alleged attempt to lure students to extend sexual favours in return for better grades.

The story was published last month, and criticised the Governor's alleged involvement.
