Rafale deal: Reliance ‘mandatory’ for Dassault, says French report

New Delhi, Oct 11 (DC): The Rafael controversy took another turn on Wednesday when a French journal claimed that it had a document which shows that Dassault Aviation considered its alliance with Anil Ambani’s Reliance Defence as “imperative and mandatory” to bag the contract.

According to a report, the Mediapart article says the document shows a top Dassault official, Loik Segalen had explained to its staff on May 11, 2017, and that the joint venture was a “trade-off” for 36 jet deals.

However, Dassault Aviation has denied the report and said it “has freely chosen to make a partnership with India’s Reliance Group.”

In a press release, Dassault said, “This joint-venture, Dassault Reliance Aerospace Ltd (DRAL), was created February 10, 2017. Other partnerships have been signed with other companies such as BTSL, DEFSYS, Kinetic, Mahindra, Maini, SAMTEL,... Other negotiations are ongoing with a hundred-odd other potential partners.”

Last month, in an interview with Mediapart, former French President Francois Hollande had claimed that the Indian government had proposed reliance defence as the partner in Rafale deal and France did not have a choice. Later, Dassault clarified that the decision to partner with Reliance Defence was their own.

Elections are due to take place in five states in November and December leading up to the 2019 general election. Allegations and counter-allegations began after Hollande’s statement. The opposition accused the government of ignoring state-run defence company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to benefit Anil Ambani. Both the government and the industrialist have rubbished the charges.

The new allegations come on a day when Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is headed to France where she will visit a Dassault factory where the 36 Rafale aircraft are being manufactured for India. Sitharaman who is on a three-day visit will also meet her French counterpart, Florence Parly.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the revised deal to buy 36 Rafale jets after talks with President Hollande on April 10, 2015 in Paris.

Anil Ambani was part of a business delegation that travelled with Modi on that visit.

Dassault Aviation is the beneficiary any way. PM's pact with Ambani is a big racket. If Supreme Court cannot get involved in this agreement due to national security issue, any political party in power can sign a secret and dubious deal that will be a bounty they can enjoy once they lose power. We are fooled, but helpless.

Around 250 years ago some people like Shah, Modis, Ambani, Adani, Mallya, Choksi, etc., sold India to the British East India Company so that they could have their palaces and pretend to be Rajas, Maharajas, Sultans, Nawabs, etc. Just like the Bhakths of today there were enough Indian men who joined the British and traitor Indian rulers as soldiers and fought against their own fellow Indians and terrorised them.
History is repeating itself. Nothing new. Our "elite" will always worship gora chamda.

No one in politics has a desire of National Interest. They want to give the big deals to their family members of big industrialists those who fund them during their election campaign.
Simple business philosophy....will anyone choose a fully bankrupt and less than a month old company for their own business partnership???? This is chosen just to benefit Anil Ambani to come out from his bankruptcy by the tax payers money. Our politicians (not all) will not hesitate to sell the nation for their own benefit or to benefit their friends.

Come on my friends. Rise above petty politics and party affiliations. Here I am not trying to score any points by saying that a particular party is better or worse than any other.

Think in the interest of the nation. Here we have one man who preaches day in and day out that he is safeguarding the interest of the country but he is actually trying to favour his masters at the cost of the nation. As far as I am concerned, it hardly matters to me whether he is from the BJP or the Congress.

To me what is important is that he is not doing any favour to the people of India. Instead he is betraying the trust the people have reposed in him. So whether anyone belongs to the BJP or the Congress, if he is not truthful to the nation, expose such a person whoever it is. Let us think of the country first. The political party or the individual is not important here.

    @ Mr. Shankar,

Yes, you are right. Thats why Nirmala is in France now may be to do some damage control.
Just a logical question, Suppose if I enter into a big contract with you and you know that there are irregularities but if you speak up then you are scared of loosing the contract. Thats exactly the status of Dassault now. They cant afford to loose this one

So in short, 'Crooked Chowkidaar' had forced Dassault Aviation to tie-up with Ambani’s Reliance Defence .

The funny thing here is that Anil Ambani's Defence company was given a contract to build Naval ships and it failed miserably to do so. Please read more on Business line "IDBI Bank takes Reliance Naval to bankruptcy court"
