After Sabarimala order, Muslim women group to move SC seeking entry in all mosques

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 12 (PTI): Drawing inspiration from the Supreme Court verdict permitting women of all age groups into the Sabarimala temple, a Kerala-based Muslim women's right group is gearing up to approach the apex court, demanding the entry of women in all mosques across the country.

NISA, a progressive women's forum, will soon move the top court. The group will not just seek permission for women to offer prayers in the mosques, but also fight for appointing them as 'imams' (clerics).

The outfit, which has been campaigning for gender equality within Islam, also wants to curb the practices of polygamy and 'nikah-halala', a community law that allows a Muslim woman to remarry her former husband only after marrying another person and consummating the wedding with him.

NISA president V P Zuhra told news agency PTI that there were no records stating that the Holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad had opposed women entering mosques and offering prayers. She also hailed the top court verdict lifting the ban on the menstruating women from offering worship at the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa Temple as "historic".

"Like men, women also have the constitutional rights to offer worship according to their belief. So, like in Sabarimala, we want the entry of women in all mosques, cutting across denominations and establish their right to worship," the activist said. Zuhra said discussions were on with the lawyer and a petition in this regard would be filed at the Supreme Court soon.

She said at present, women are allowed to offer prayers at mosques under Jamaat-e-Islami and Mujahid denominations, while they are barred from mosques under the predominant Sunni faction. Even in the mosques where women are allowed, there are separate entrances and enclosures for worship for men and women, the NISA chief said.

"Our demand is to end this gender discrimination and allow Muslim women to pray in all mosques, cutting across denominations," said Zuhra, one of the earliest petitioners against triple talaq in the apex court. She urged the orthodox section in the community to explain who had asked them to impose such restrictions on women which amount to violation of constitutional rights.

"There is no such gender discrimination to offer worship in Mecca, the holy city. The faithful, both men and women, together circle the Kaaba. Then why are the restrictions imposed on us in our mosques?" she said.

The rights campaigner said there were records showing that Prophet Muhammad himself had allowed his wife in the mosque. "There are several women scholars in the Muslim community. But they are not allowed to be Imams and lead prayers in mosques. This practice also should be changed," she said.

NISA had approached the apex court recently, demanding equal property rights for Muslim women.

On September 28, a five-judge Constitution bench, headed by then chief justice Dipak Misra, lifted the ban on the entry of women of menstrual age into the shrine.

Woman got more right...... Just go sit on woman reserved seats in any transport i.e. metro, bus etc they will chase you out but when they occupy seats any compartment and even senior citizens are standing they will not offer the seats.
Men will offer seats to ladies but not ladies will offer their seats to any other ladies or elderly people.

You seem to be so empathetic towards men (obviously), but the same men entered women's' toilet, placed cameras and shot them in privacy.

Have women done that ? Therefore, please save your sympathy, let women acquire the power they feel is necessary.

WOMEN must be allowed to pray whatever the place it is.be it a temple.. or a mosque.. or gurudwara or church there should NOT be discrimination on GENDER.if woman wants to pray then allow her to pray the place i.e just a building is irrelevant.men opposing womens entry suffer from gross insecurity.
WITH passing time laws must be changed & islam or any other religion NOT immune to it.in fact muslim men should actively & wholeheartedly welcome women in mosque.banning them is just plain cruel & 50% of population can't be subjected to live under perpetual cruelty.it is their basic & fundamental right.it is shocking even in 21st century these archaic mindless laws exist.woman can go to space but not place of worship!!
SC should not waste any more time but allow women to any place of worship of her choice.

Dowry is social evil and is not stocked to Muslims alone. Regarding polygamy is not social evil, infact it's better than prostitution.

By the way polygamy is not compulsion, it's once own choice when he can fulfill equal rights at least when taking care of wife and children.

The supreme Court should intervene and allow people to worship in their Mother Tongue in their worship places.

Presently most of them are utilising exclusively Sanskrit and Arabic without which their God /gods & goddesses cannot perceive peoples Mother Tongue.

GOD PERCEIVES ALL LANGUAGES WHICH INCLUDES LANGUAGES OF THIS WORLD AND GOD IS THE ONE WHO MADE THE LANGUAGES.

God is the one who made menstruation periods which is natural to women.

What God has made man should not break it.

Hopefully, Modi/BJP supporters will not celebrate 'tit-for-tat' over this movement. You guys need to be informed that mosques in Islamic countries do have provision for women to pray in mosques because those mosques are huge, palatial and have separate entry/pray area for women. Here in India mosques are very small that accommodates very few numbers of men. If they were to be divided into two, imagine the situation.

As for this move, hope the women are ready to shed their assets/land to enlarge the mosques as enthusiastically as they are bound to get the permission in line of Shabarimala. Do not go by those who may be inciting you, do also think about consequences of your demands.

Supreme Court should order such retards to get admitted to mental hospital.

Let these morons show any Prophets or Messengers who were female out of around 1 lakh 24 thousand right from the inception of Islam. If there were no Female Prophets or Messenger then how come these half knowledge women asking females to lead as an imaam ??

The more Supreme Court acknowledge such cases the more there will be revolt in the nation from entire community when the Religious beliefs are damaged.
We cannot agree with stupidity giving the reason as Gender equality.

Do Supreme Court or these kind of ladies tomorrow want Male to give birth to child citing the reason as Gender Equality??

Why the anger, There’s not a single verse in holy QURAN which prohibits ladies from entering mosques.

Say- It is more excellent for a woman to pray in her house than in her courtyard, and more excellent for her to pray in her private chamber than in her house.
Arguement was -Women have to look after infants n household work, an important duty that cannot be neglected,
Sawaab (blessings)-In mosque- Uv to escorting her to the mosque //she has to take permission too.
Only in India we have the difference allowing women entering some mosque, - I dont know which word n english fits them -(Restricting)
And your last para z too much,
If Prophet Mohammed(pbuh) was one among us today, there would have been a drastic change n do's and don't.
Nobody z perfect, n we take advantage for everything we do that we will be FORGIVEN

Again statements according to convenience and perception.Have you clearly read her demands ? She says women also want to lead the prayers and want to pray alongside men in the mosque.(Even in the mosques where women are allowed, there are separate entrances and enclosures for worship for men and women).Have you read or seen anywhere in the world where women are leading the prayers.? Is it mentioned in quran or the 6 books of hadiths ?

Read history. Development happened when people living in dark ages came out from the clutches of regressive Organised Religion and started free thinking resulting in Renaissance which culminated into Industrial Revolution.

There are still people who believe that earth is flat because it is written in the Book. Religion is for self realisation and for development one needs Science.

    @ H.S., Mangalore,
Earth is flat is an ancient Pagan belief which was erroneously held by the church during the Dark Ages and when the Book of Knowledge was forbidden to the common man. It is highly unfortunate that an intellectual like Galileo was blinded for speaking contrary to the Roman Catholic Church’s false belief. In the Bible it is nowhere mentioned that the earth is flat. The Book of Job says “Thou hanged the earth upon nothing” which means the earth suspends in space without any support from above or beneath. Secondly in the book of Kings it is written “God dwells upon the sphere of the earth” which again indicates that the earth is a round globe. So the inspired Word of God is true in all respects.
