Kolkata: Tragedy Crushes Family’s Happiest Moment

Times of India

KOLKATA, Nov 10: It could have been the happiest weekend they have had in a long time. The one for which the Guha family had been waiting for a year now.
Instead, it saw their hopes being dashed and their world falling apart. Thirty-year-old Aniruddha Guha, their only son, was killed in an autorickshaw accident barely two kilometres from his home.

The MBA — who had rejected several job offers in the last few months — had finally bagged the job of his dreams with a bank. He was heading home with the appointment letter.

“Aniruddha had seemed very excited about the job. He had taken the interview on Saturday and got the appointment letter immediately after that. He called to tell me that he would be home in half an hour for lunch. I told him that I was waiting but Aniruddha never came home,” said 65-year-old Basudeb Guha, Aniruddha’s father. A former chief engineer with Fort Gloster in Howrah, Guha is in a state of shock and has confined himself to his room. His mother Jaya has been sent to Aniruddha’s paternal grandfather’s home at Bhawanipur.
Neighbours described Aniruddha as soft-spoken, studious and very respectful of his parents.

He had a bright career ahead of him. After his graduation, he had done an MBA from IISWBM. Several jobs came his way but Aniruddha was not happy with them. While he turned down some, he gave up a couple of jobs after working for a few weeks. “He thought he could do better and was willing to wait for the right one. Aniruddha had his father’s approval on this. Some time back, he had an offer from a leading insurance company but his father thought it was not the right job for him. So, he let it go. This time, Aniruddha felt he had got what he was looking for. But it was not to be,” said Basudeb Bhowmik, a family friend.

Some autorickshaw drivers and eyewitneses claim Aniruddha’s carelessness led to the accident, but his family refuses to accept that. Eyewitness accounts said Aniruddha had been talking on his mobile, sitting to the right of the driver. “Even if he was on the phone, he must have been holding on to something. The auto swerved so suddenly that he was thrown from his seat,” said a relative.
