Champions League: Ajax ride late winner against Benfica

Amsterdam, Oct 24 (IANS): A goal by Moroccan Noussair Mazroui in the 92nd minute gave Ajax a 1-0 victory over Benfica, thanks to the only error committed by Argentine defender German Conti throughout the game.

Tuesday night's win places the Dutch as co-leaders of Group E with Bayern Munich, both with seven points, reports Efe.

The game was lively, more balanced than expected, thanks to the good skills the Portuguese showed, and with chances to score for both. However, the goddess of fortune winked at Ajax when some among the spectators were already heading for the stadium's exit.

A poor clearance by Conti ended up on the boots of David Neres, who had just entered the field. His pass reached Mazroui, whose shot crashed into the leg of Spain's Alex Grimaldo and knocked the Benfica keeper off his feet to finish in the back of the net.

It was Conti, one of the best players of Benfica, whose constant attention saved the Portuguese from receiving any goals during regulation time.

The two teams entered the field knowing that Bayern Munich had won their match against AEK Atenas. Therefore, they had to look for a win to avoid falling short of the positions that would allow them to advance to the next round of the Champions League.
