Byndoor, Oct 24: The lone fisherman from Kesarakody, Shirur near here, who had left with 17 other fishermen belonging to Uttara Kannada district for fishing from Dubai, and who was arrested by Iranian police for crossing the international border, is yet to be released.
18 persons including Abdul Hussain from Shirur, who had left from Dubai on July 27 for fishing, had been taken into custody by the police personnel of Iran, accusing them of crossing their border.
After reports about their plight and the worry on the part of family members back home appeared in the media, Honorary president of 'Namma Kundapura' Kannada team, Praveen Kumar Shetty, who also happens to be the president of Dubai KNRI, led a team which contacted the officials of the Indian consulate at Dubai and tried for the release of the fishermen. On account of the team's efforts, the Iran government had released six fishermen.
Although there was an assurance to release the others within a week, so far this assurance has not been kept. Therefore, Abdul Hussain continues to be incarcerated at Iran along with 11 other fishermen from Uttara Kannada district.
The information from Dubai that these people might be released on Friday has given some respite to the family members of these fishermen who are spending sleepless nights over the fate of their breadwinners.
