Udupi, Oct 26: With an aim to provide a platform for budding singers in Udupi, ICYM Unit of St John Evangelist Church, Pangla is organising Udupi diocesan level inter- parish Konkani singing competition for the 15th year in a row. The competitions will be held on Sunday, October 28 at the Church Hall from 9 am onwards.
In the year 2003, Fr Alexander Lobo noticed that there were many singing talents in the areas of Shirva, Kallianpur, Pangla and nearby parishes of the deanery. Taking this into consideration, he took the initiative of arranging competitions in different categories. And till date, the competitions are being held continuously every year and more categories are introduced with growing number of participants from the different parts of the Udupi diocese.
From 2003 till 2012, 7 categories below 10 and 15 groups, solo for boys, girls and group singing competitions and above 15 years solo for men and women, duet, group singing competitions were held. During this time, competitions were held in the afternoon 2.30 pm to 7.30 pm.
On the request of the Fr Leslie, then parish priest and with the request of the organizers, the 10th year competitions were held from morning till evening. At this time additional 3 categories were added and those are for the below 10 years boys and girls solo and group.
Since the Udupi diocese came into its existence, the bishop of the diocese gave more encouragement to explore talents. In the year 2017, the singing competition was organised on a bigger scale and it was held at the Udupi diocese level. Also more categories were added such as solo for boys and girls, group for above 10 years and solo for men, women, duet and group above 15 years.
Every year these competitions are gaining more importance with the help of the parishioners, parish priest, assistant parish priest, and animator’s guidance. On behalf of the parish, ICYM members are taking up the initiative.
As in the previous years, this year also the arrangements for the mega event have been made on the same stage.
During the current 15th year, the competitions will have two main categories, one for children and the other for adults and ten subcategories.
Children are allocated two age categories, under 10, and between ages 11 and 15. Each category comprises girls' solo singing, boys' solo singing, and group singing.
Adults may contest in male solo singing, female solo singing, mixed duet and group singing.
Rules
One entry is allowed per parish for each sub-category, which means there can be a maximum of ten entries for the competition from one parish.
"Judgment will be based on the pitch and quality of voice, rhythm, tempo and general presentation and expressions," said the organisers.
Prizes
Every sub-category will have three prizes, making it 30 prizes in all. Top three teams with the highest number of prizes will get cash prizes. An award of Rs 6,666 will be given to the winning team, Rs 5,555 to the first runner-up, and Rs 4,444 to the second. Shields will also be presented.
