Udupi: Long wait ends - Karavali Junction opens for traffic

Udupi, Oct 27: At long last, Karavali Junction over-bridge and underpass standing on national highway 66 were opened for traffic on Friday October 26. Several protests were held and memorandums were submitted seeking early completion of the work at Karavali junction in particular and national highway 66 in general by people frustrated over painstakingly slow pace of work. The company had recently agreed to complete the work by November 1.



For the present, only one of the two underpasses has been opened up for vehicular movement. This has helped vehicles from the city bound for Malpe, Kundapur and from Malpe to Kundapur and the city to move ahead without interruption. The existing system will continue for the present in respect of vehicles moving from Kundapur to the city and Mangaluru and vehicles from the city towards Padubidri. 

With the vehicles now using the over-bridge, pressure on the service roads has eased since Friday. Vehicles coming into the city alone can use the service roads hereafter. If the other underpass is also opened for vehicular traffic soon, it will help to make movement of vehicles smoother.

    The mega project of highway has got a momentum because of coming Loksabha election. The erstwhile highway has been having the two way facility throughout, so that people have no hurdles for their local movements. Therefore service roads should have constructed either side throughout the high way. People are driving in opposite sides in several places like Balaipade, Udyavar, Katapady, Pangala etc. due to absence of service roads. This wrong entry in opposite side in high ways is the reason for accidents many times. This very essential requirement of providing service road never addressed properly.

    This looks very dangerous. Please provide traffic signal at the junction between the traffic which comes under the tunnel and the road passing below the bridge. Otherwise there will be many accidents everyday.

    If this is unscientific, what about one way flyover at Surathkal, Kuloor and Kottara?
    At least two way Karavali Junction flyover is better compared to flyovers in Suarthkal-Kottara section, which was made one way due to pressure of land lobbies beside the highway.

    Chaddi Bhakts only wants to take credit for someone else's hardwork and efforts.
