Udupi: Farmers should adopt comprehensive farming methods – DC Priyanka

Udupi, Oct 28: Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis advised farmers to adopt comprehensive method of agriculture to make agriculture more profitable.

She was speaking in inauguration of Krishi Mela 2018, exhibition and demonstration programme by horticulture university, Shivamogga, regional agriculture and research center, agricultural university, Brahmavar with the cooperation of related departments on Saturday, October 27.

“The areas of cultivable lands in Udupi are less. Farmers should follow comprehensive method of agriculture, using modern technology and instruments to make it more profitable. Farmers should obtain assistance from agricultural university. Farmers should opt for method of growing grazing grass, duck units, fish rearing, poultry and piggery. You can obtain assistance agricultural scientists,” she said. A discussion forum was held about farming.

Agriculture and horticulture research centre assistant director Dr S U Patil, Agriculture and horticulture university Shivamooga chancellor Dr M K Naik, Dr T H Gowda, research director Dr B R Gurumoorthi, Bengaluru agriculture and technology research center director Dr M J Chandregowda, senior scientist Dhananjay, horticulture department deputy director Bhuvaneshwari and animal husbandry department’s deputy director Dr Sarvotham Udupa were present.

    Yes Jossey Saldanha, you are so right :
    Growing crops like monocotyledons followed by dicotyledons on the same piece of land is crop rotation.
    This reduces incidence of pests and diseases, weeds buildup and maintain the soil fertility and increases yield.
    Example AA) Leafy Vegetable like Amaranthus/Coriander/Methi/Mint
    followed by Root Crops Beetroot/ Carrot/Radish
    followed by Solanaceous crop like Brinjal (Eggplant ) Capsicum/ Tomato
    followed By Beans/Peas

    BB) Solanaceous crop like Brinjal(Eggplant) Potato/Tomato followed by Root crop like
    Beetroot /Carrot/ Radish/Turnips

    Companion Crops /Mixed crops give the farmer the advantage of avoid diseases & pest on the main crop by distracting the Insect/ Pest concerned. Thus not only reducing costs of inputs but also ensuring sustainability.
    For example Solanaceous crops like Eggplant (Brinjal) and Chillies are usually attacked by Fruit Borer and by growing Chrysanthemum flowers as companion crop; the main crop is not attacked by the pest.

    10 Cabbages + 1 Mustard
    10 Tomatoes + 1 Garlic
    10 Brinjals +1 Tomato

    Watermelon + Cowpea

    additionally we have to look and educate about the natural ways of pest control - usage of colour wraps for pest control for banana, fruits etc. , rodent control - using owls , pollination using bamboo bees etc. like adapted by Israel. building co-operatives by like minded people. so the investment becomes easy , . water - right amount of water usage for the crops .
    usage of simple tools - like we can use pull cart to transport - manure and harvests with right kind of wheels etc. complicated tools - for automation . sharing of knowledge and experience and improvising .

    Pest population can be reduced by companion crops plants like :
    1) Radish: By planting Cabbage, Cucumber & Radish Cabbage maggot and cucumber beetle will be repelled.
    2) Garlic: Reels root maggot, bean beetle, Cabbage Looper and even Rabbits
    3) Lettuce is a good companion crop for Carrot vas it repels carrot flies.
    4) Mexican Marigold Reels Insects and rabbits
    5) Onion : Repels Cabbage Hopper and Rabbits
    6) Oregano : Effective pest repellant
    7) Peppermint : Most effective against Cabbage Looper, flea beetles,Squash Bugs and White flies.
    8) Rosemary Flowers: Reels Cabbage Looper, Carrot fly, slugs, snail and Mexican Bean Beetle.
    9) Spear Mint : Broad Spectrum pest repellent for Fleas, moths, ants, beetles, rodents, aphids, squash bugs and Cabbage looper.
    10) Amaranth (Amarathus spinosus) : Repels Cutworms
    11) Thyme : Repels Cabbage looper, Cabbage maggot , corn earworm, whiteflies and tomato hornworms.

    Apart from making the farm Diverse , 5 most important trees in a farm which will help increase yields, protect crops from pests and diseases & help replenish the soil with beneficial microbes
    and nutrients .

    1. NEEM (Azadirachta indica) : It can be grown on the boundaries. Its leaves , fruits and twigs make excellent fertilizers , crop protection, bio solutions and keeps away soil borne diseases .Under its shade different shade loving crops can be grown. Neem leaves are also in great demand form Ayurvedic medicine manufacturers. 10 Neem Trees can be grown in a farm.

    2. Custard Apple (Annona reticulate) :This fruit bearing tree is a miraculous tree its leaves are packed with medicinal properties. The extract of the crushed leaves when sprayed acts a the best bio control pesticide and keep mosquitoes away. Have 2 Custard Apple Trees in the farm

    3. Peepal (Ficus religosa) Helps soil Fertility . Helps multiply micro organisms in the soil in the quickest time frame. It has high protein concentration and used as a fodder in limited quantities for livestock. It can be grown in poor quality soils which will gradually turn fertile . It helps reduce the hot temperatures in summer and control soil erosion , improves soil structure and fertility . One Tree will suffice for a big Farm.

    4. Amla {Gooseberry –(Phyllanthus emblica )} Indian Gooseberry has maximum Citric Acid Content. The Amla Tree helps soil gain strength that is passed on to the plants to grow healthily and free of pests & diseases. Light spray of diluted Amla extract helps boost resistance power of plants. It helps reduce pH of Cow Urine before it is sprayed to the plants. 3 Amla Trees will suffice for a Farm.

    5. Castor (Ricinus communis) It is the host for pests and parasites . Due to its sticky features it attracts all pests and insects thereby the rest of the Farm is free from all pest attacks especially caterpillar

    This is how a District Collector should be. These words from a highest official in the district is morale booster for farmers.
    Unfortunately many of the DCs are concentrating on development of the main city of the district, addressing traffic, city infrastructure, bar timings etc, only city centered issues!!

    Profitable to whom..... the seller???...
    Farmers are less than 20 % of the price.. for example..the banana ... farmer is getting 20 rupees per kg...... and seller is selling it 80 rupees per kg..... vegetable farmers getting 12 to 15 rupees per kg. But sellers selling it 60 to 80 rupees per kg... .and in festivals seller selling it more than 100 rupees per kg... who getting profit.... after labour and fertilizer cost farmers not even getting his hard work....
    ....... government must fix price for farmers ..

    well said, that is the reality, the tender coconut sells in city for 30 - 40 but the farmer for working hard gets only 12-14 , yes the seller takes the risk of selling also the farmer spends his life, similarly all the fruits and vegetables,

    there were talks about providing places for farmers in the market so they can sell directly, but in some places the such markets are no mans land, and in some places they are not available,

    the formula should be , there should be minimum price fixed - it cannot fall below, say for tender coconut 20 for farmer , and the selling price 30 , if the selling price goes high say 40 , then farmer should get 27.5 .

    also we fall short of preservation and storage , when we get excess of tomatoes they are thrown on road, and when they fall short of demand - their cost sky rocketed.
