Udupi: Alert citizen's presence of mind averts major train disaster

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Oct 28: A mindful and alert citizen, who ran three kilometers in spite of having pain in his right leg and informed the railway authorities of the crack he had noticed on the track, during his daily walk averted what could have been one more train disaster.

This responsible and alert citizen is none other than Krishna Poojary (53), a resident near Kunjipade Vishnumoorthi temple of Korangrapadi in the district.

Krishna, who has lost strength in his right leg since three months and also has pain in his waist, goes for walking near the railway track that passes near the Korangrapadi Brahmastana Nagabana, in order to regain his earlier muscle strength of the leg as well as the waist. On Saturday, October 27, when he was on his usual stroll by the railway track, he noticed a crack in the railway track. At the same time, one train passed over the track and the crack got widened. Another train was supposed to arrive on the track within a short time.

Krishna Poojary

Krishna, without taking into consideration his pain in the leg and waist, ran towards the nearest Indrali railway station which is a good three km from the spot of the track where he had noticed the crack and informed the railway authorities of the same. The railway authorities swung into action immediately, based on the information given by Krishna and stopped two trains, one at Indrali and the other at Padubidri railway stations. The team of three railway engineers made Krishna to sit in the inspection trolley and visited the crack spot and undertook temporary repairs for about 40 minutes and then allowed the train to start their journey again.

Krishna works as a daily wage labourer in a shop that makes Gobi Manchoori near Korangrapadi junction. He is married to Kusuma and has two sons. The determination of Krishna in spite of his physical pain in conveying the vital emergency information to the concerned authorities in the nick of time is lauded by one and all.

Railway stations should pass on information to people residing near railway tracks about their emergency telephone number so that at least people with mobile phone need not run to inform them about such dangers.

My big salute to Krishna Poojari for his alert presence of mind in detecting the crack on the railway track which otherwise could have caused a major disaster. God only gave him the strength to walk the three kilometers in spite of disability to inform the railway authorities. Anything could have happened. God bless him and hope he gets a good reward.

    Good job Krishnaji.

I am not sure whether the Railways will reward him or not, but many of the common citizen definitely would love to.
In these kind of incidences, media should make a point to publish the good Samaritan's bank account and appeal the public to reward him.

Great job by Mr Krishna Poojary.

On a side note, could not help noticing that "Gobi Manchoori" has reached Korangrapadi junction.

It was a dish invented by the some creative Chinese restaurant to provide a spicy dish to Indian customers. I don't think one would ever find such a dish in the normal Chinese cuisine.
