‘Fancy dress Hinduism’: BJP slams Rahul Gandhi over temple visits

Indore, Oct 29(PTI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday said Congress president Rahul Gandhi is exhibiting "fancy dress Hinduism" to fool people and demanded action against his party colleague Shashi Tharoor for his "scorpion" remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The saffron party's attack on Gandhi came in the backdrop of his frequent visits to temples -- the latest being a trip to Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar temple on Monday, ahead of his tour of the politically significant Malwa-Nimar region in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh.

The ruling party also asked Gandhi to expel Tharoor from the Congress for his controversial remarks against PM Modi.

The Congress MP from Kerala stoked a fresh controversy on Sunday, claiming that an unnamed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader had compared the Prime Minister to "a scorpion sitting on a Shivling" and termed it as an extraordinarily striking metaphor.

"The objectionable statement of Tharoor, who is very close to Rahul Gandhi, has disrespected not only the holy deity of Lord Mahadev, worshipped by crores of Hindus, but also Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In such a situation, how will he (Gandhi) offer prayers at the Mahakal temple," BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra told reporters in Indore.

Alleging that Congress leaders were continuously disrespecting the Hindus by making objectionable statements, Patra demanded that Gandhi apologise for Tharoor's remarks and expel the 62-year-old UN diplomat-turned-politician from the party.

He claimed that after the humiliating defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, a committee headed by former Union minister A K Antony had said the Congress should take care of the Hindus for its political revival as it was losing ground because of its projected image of a "party of Muslims".

"After the Antony committee's report, Rahul Gandhi is exhibiting fancy dress Hinduism continuously. To mislead the Hindus, he is sporting a "janeu" (scared thread) over the shirt. We demand that 'janeudhari' Rahul Gandhi clarify to which 'gotra' (clan) does he belong to," Patra said.

He also said since Gandhi had not given any answer to this question, people were calling him a "Vatican gotra ka Brahmin".

The Congress chief's mother, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, is an Italian by birth.

    Whether what Rahul doing is right or wrong we can't say. But BJP is shivering in its pants. All its comments are out of its nervousness. Earlier, it was projecting Hindu religion as its fiefdom. Now Rahul is trying to snatch that prerogative. Congress party also has a lot of Hindu leaders, let alone millions of members. Perhaps he has chosen a new path to vindicate them. Why anyone else should comment adversely on it. Nothing is wrong in a political war. We have to wait and see how this strategy will work.

    Nobody owns any religion.
    However should this fellow like a Phirangi Baaba put a Jhenuv outside his Kurthaa and wear a Rusraksh like a Cyanide Pill.? With an Antenna like Red Tilak and a foolish grin the picture one gets is of a Musketeer who has lost his pants elsewhere.
    The feeling one gets is that he is goaded into this Fancy Dress Competition.
    He does not even have the Will to say no when it comes to such matters.
    What to do ?

    Stop envisaging pictures of your Hero running amock sweeping everything before him .He is at present cent percent similar to a Fancy Dress Competitior only.Only not knowing what to do ?
    So he prays with folded hands in a Dargha,seeks duaa in a temple and most probably
    will prostrate in a church ......

    The Congress party never used Lord Rama, Lord Ayappa, Ayodhya, and Godman for the vote bank. This BJP's Papu never claimed he is devoted to Shiva. But Modi being an ardent follower who went UP on the calls of 'Ganga' don't even know his own Goddess.

    Such a low level cheap remarks by a bureaucrat cum CEO of oil & gas (where govt is meddling in private entity). Only people in BJP can have so many titles and occupations without any IQ in them so that Feku and Daku can fidget it. BJP showing so much sensitivity and attention to every move by Rahul Gandhi shows BJP is so nervous and getting intimidated and threatened by Rahul Gandhi's smart and wise befitting reply. BJP is now running out of thier own concocted rhetorical expressions and bringing RG down to thier own IQ level because no other options left in them.
