Urjit Patel is finally defending RBI from Modi: Rahul

New Delhi, Oct 29 (IANS): Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday hailed Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel for 'defending' the central bank from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, after reports suggested that tension prevailed between the RBI and the Centre.

"Nice that (Urjit) Patel is finally defending the #RBI from 'Mr 56'. Better late than never. India will never allow the BJP/RSS to capture our institutions," Rahul said.

RBI Deputy Governor Viral Acharya had last week spoken on the need for the central bank's autonomy at a memorial lecture. He had spoken on the "Importance of Independent Regulatory Institutions - The Case of the Central Bank".

Acharya had said that the theme of his speech was suggested by Patel.

The RBI Employees Association on Monday came out in support of Acharya, stating that "undermining the country's central bank is a recipe for disaster".

Media reports have said that there have been difference on a host of issues between the government and the RBI Governor and there has also been a breakdown of communication.

The RBI officials are supposed to be experts in their field. On the other hand, we have people in the Government without much knowledge or education. They are just masquerading as experts. So unfortunate that such a vast country like India is being ruled by people whose background or education is woefully short of expectations.

RBI Governor, Urjit Patel is finally standing up against 56". He should have done that on November 8, 2016 when certain currency notes were demonetised. Country would have been saved from many disasters, such as death of more than 150 people standing in queue in front of bank counters for exchanging banned cash, loss of employment of so many persons working in small establishments due to restriction of cash. The economy has still not recovered from trauma caused by that draconian measure. However, better late than never. Wish Patel every success.

This is the main reason for rupee losing value against dollar and hike in fuel price because BJP govt interfering with independence of RBI. Present RBI governor and deputy governor are very much against govt intervention and bending rules according to govt's self interest.
