Rahul may not be PM candidate in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, hints Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi, Nov 5 (Zee News): Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has suggested that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Rahul Gandhi “may not be” the prime ministerial candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The Kerala MP said that his party would certainly have alliances with other parties before going into the polls but a decision of the PM candidate would be taken collectively.

The decision on the prime ministerial face of the Congress-led alliance would be a collective one as “party has a broader notion of a leader unlike the BJP,” he said.

Tharoor said that there is no dearth of talented and capable leaders in the party and mentioned the likes of Pranab Mukherjee and P Chidambaram for their excellent track record in their political career.

“We had people like Pranab Mukherjee, P Chidambaram, and others having a tremendous track record,” he stated.

Tharoor, however, said that Rahul is the unquestionable choice of Congress workers as their leader.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP maintained that if free and fair elections are held, Congress led by Rahul Gandhi would win big in polls.

After his controversial “scorpion analogy”, the Congress MP yet again took a dig at PM Narendra Modi and called him a "hero on a white stallion with an upraised sword in his hand".

He also accused the PM of being a one-man government before whom everybody is dancing.

Tharoor also claimed that India now has the "most centralised PMO" in its history.

"Every decision is taken by the PMO (prime minister's office). Every file has to be sent to the PMO for approval," he claimed.

Tharoor had courted a fresh controversy at the Bangalore Literature Festival on Sunday when he claimed that an unnamed RSS leader had compared PM Modi to "a scorpion sitting on a Shivling" and "you cannot remove him with your hand and you cannot hit it with a chappal either".

Inteestingly, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram had last month said that the Congress has never ‘officially’ said that its president Rahul Gandhi should be the prime minister if an opposition alliance formed the next government.

He insisted the Congress’ focus was on dislodging the BJP government and bringing in a “progressive” alternative.

“The Congress party has not officially said Rahul Gandhi should be installed as prime minister. When one or two persons spoke about it, the AICC leadership asked them not to discuss the issue. An alliance should take shape, that alliance should win, and the alliance parties will decide who will be the PM,” Chidambaram had said this in an interview to a Tamil TV channel.

In India & other countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan etc........religion plays a vital role in the minds of voters. Modi's rise started when he was hounded by the media for his role in 2002 riots. Soon he became a hero in the minds of ill liberals. This he took to his advantage and although he denied any involvement he overnight became a leader of fanatics who could stand up to a created ghost from another community.

Congress on the other hand has certain principles and although they are Hindus too they are secular Hindus who believe all religions have to be accommodated. Here is the twist as Congress cannot accept to build a temple nor deny. Even when Rajiv was the PM and later thereafter there were a lot of people who were deadly against the Gandhi family and Rahul too faces the same wrath.

Intolerant people will find a way or the other to create problems in this world. For eg:- if we assume that Kashmir is granted freedom it is foolish to expect that there will no more be militancy as some people are born to live in trouble and new issues will be explored. Similarly if temple is created a new issue that is un thought-of of till now will arise to keep hate mongers occupied.

Very few people know that MP Shashi Tharoor is one of a stiff contender for United Nation top post before US and EU voted for South Korea in favor.

By keeping aside is personal matters, he is one of the able candidates for Prime Minister post himself. He is a very educated person and capable to handle Indian affairs like the United Nation.

The BJP-RSS know this fact very well and has deputed Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swami for his character assassination with a bundle of legal cases.

In BJP Prime Minister Modi has failed in front who can't even produce his own education qualification to this date. But in BJP there are many qualified who has no connection with RSS hierarchy is the best bet if seriously considering the economy of the nation.

The nation doesn't need the second term for criminals, fanatic minded, hands soaked in blood with the bogus degree to be our Prime Minister.

If Sonia Gandhi can sacrifice for the cause of nation Mr. Rahul Gandhi should also think for the better of the nation.

Tharoor may be from the UN but has no appeal in party level politics, as he is not a grass root worker. He has more issues than credits to boast off. Moreover what ever you have down loaded here too is lies. As long as Cong and its supporters play these cards like blaming, lashing, attacking etc there is no survival for a this grand old party. Victory is a long way off.

Let Mr. Modi come out clean on whatever accusations are pending on him.
We all are very much aware of the achievements during these 5 years. Presently the emple issue is gaining all the heat just before the elections! BJP could built tallest statue as an achievement but Ram Temple still under negotiation.

Rahul Gandhi is very soft and gentle. Sadly in politics such attributes are worthless. The problem with Rahul is that he cant FAKE like others

Such a step should have been taken much earlier and at least congress face would have been saved. Moreover, Rahul Gandhi is not in a position or capable to govern the country. Very calculated decision in view of coming elections. As Mr. Tharur has expressed that there is no dearth for senior and experienced as well as aggressive leaders among alliance parties. Good luck

    First sign of losing election.....
Congress party is simply wastng time & energy, they don't have any chances of coming back to power on their own either in the states or in the country. Even if they combine all of the opposition including Shiv Sena, they will not come to power for sure.

    Chethan,

Last time for state elections, domestic workers were enticed by paying Rs. 300/- each, this is how the audience was gathered for Modi's election campaigns. Imagine this year's conditions after demonization, gas prices and existing ghittalas !

    Therefore, don't be overconfident.

Karnataka's local news may not be coming in Mumbai local news papers. Please be regular on DW, here, during state elections time, a reader openly commented that her maid did not come to work for over three days because she was going to the rallies where they paid money just for sitting in the audience.

Like ur maids story we have heard a lot of stories & seen young men where congies paying for the volunteers to be in the rally campaign for Rs 1000 + FOOD and Alcohol.
If any poor guy from the locality resist they make sure take away all the facilities provided by the govt e.g. house loan if applied, vidhva vetan to the family, problems at panchayat offices etc.
So lets not debate on whose better on political games... its all dirty politics at every end... and only poor suffers !!

If the party wants Tharoor to be the PM candidate, that can be the best decision because Tharoor is well educated, with experience in Diplomatic services. I am sure he will lead the national in a best way.

Which party supporter is asking for RG to be the PM ? I am sure none because the moment he becomes PM, he will be subjected to danger and assassinated like his father and grandmother.

For BJP's disappointment, there are sufficient educated members in the party.

Jenifer. If its true, then admittedly its a good move by the Cong. Its walk over for BJP if RaGa is the PM candidate. In fact he should be abstained from campaigning as well. Where ever he has campaigned the party has been trashed to pulp. His track record is self explanatory. So now it may be a tough fight. I dont know how capable others are.

Ms, Jennifer, I beg to differ. RaGa has proved to be an asset for the Congress esp after gifting 22 states to BJP. Its a big doubt that he would even retain Amethi this time around. I have strong feeling that he was not meant to be in politics, but forced by the party cadres as a 'marketing tool'.

First get him a safe place to contest other than Amethi.
    Next get his pronunciations correct.
Coach him to deliver speeches correctly and cut out the
Shivji.ke photo mein.Congress ka Chinn,Nanakji ke photo mein Congress Ka Chinn etc stuff.
Teach him to wear Jenuv properly.
After that get into proper alliances....Then May be may be
    Very difficult aa ?
Then find a suitable alliance for him and keep quiet.
Many ,lot's many improve after marriage. Hope for the best in this case.

What reply ??? LOL its very clear, that Pappu has made fool of himself by not coming out with facts and filing a court case, but just blabbering with 5 figures at 5 diff places. Had he filed a case , people would have taken him seriously. Now he cannot withdraw the allegation nor move forward. Will anyone vote for such a candidate for a PM post??????? . In my fair opinion, a non-congi opposition if planned well has a better chance. However the candidate has to be announced in advance, unlike what Tharoor has suggested, ONly then will anyone take a call. If not its making it easier for Modi again
