Parcel van of passenger train derails in Assam

Guwahati, Nov 21 (IANS): The front luggage cum parcel van of a passenger train derailed in Assam on Wednesday leaving the passengers stranded for close to five hours, officials said.

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) spokesman Pranav Jyoti Sharma said the incident took place in the wee hours after the Guwahati-Ledo Intercity Express dashed against an elephant at the location.

There has been a manifold increase in incidents of elephant crossings during the recent past.

It is only because of the close coordination between field level officials of both the forest and railway department that as many as 200 imminent dashings have been prevented this year alone.
