Belagavi: Sugarcane farmers end protests after minister D K Shivakumar mediates

Daijiworld Media Network – Belagavi (EP)

Belagavi, Nov 23: Minister D K Shivakumar, on Friday, November 23, met sugarcane growers who were protesting in front of Suvarna Soudha and deputy commissioner’s office here against state government. Shivakumar told them that he is responsible to fulfill the demands of the aggrieved farmers.

The farmers, who were content with the negotiation by D K Shivakumar, withdrew their protests immediately. The sugarcane growers had not budged earlier during the meeting chaired by chief minister Kumaraswamy.

D K Shivakumar went to the venue of protests and sat with them. He gave details of work being done by the government to solve problems of the growers and the progress with respect to loan waiver. He later called them to circuit house and conducted discussions there.

Most of the sugar factories in Belagavi are owned by Jarkiholi brothers. They are also political rivals of D K Shivakumar. In the circumstances, it needs to be seen if D K Shivakumar’s stand against sugarcane factory owners and in favour of sugarcane growers will result in political friction between them.

India, which imports over 80 % of its oil needs, spent $87.7 billion (Rs 5.65 lakh crore) on importing 220.43 million tonne (MT) of crude oil in 2017-18. For 2018-19, the imports are pegged at almost 227 MT.

India’s currency had its worst month in three years as crude rallied on speculation sanctions on Iran will shrink global supplies. The crude import bill for the world’s fastest-growing oil user surged 76 percent in July from a year earlier to $10.2 billion. That pushed up the trade deficit to $18 billion, the most in five years.
Diabetes is India's fastest growing disease around 72 million cases recorded in 2017, the figure expected to nearly double by 2025. Nearly 26 people die of diabetes per 100,000 population; diabetes is also one of the top causes of disability and accounts for 2.4% of the disability-adjusted life years lost (sum of years lost due to disability or premature death due to the disease).

There are 69.1 million people with diabetes in India, the second highest number in the world after China, which has 109 million people with diabetes. It is estimated that diabetes patients in urban areas spend Rs 10,000 and patients in rural areas spend Rs 6,260 every year on treatment, according to a 2013 study published by The Association of Physicians of India.

In fact, Brazil has replaced almost 42 percent of its gasoline needs with sugarcane ethanol – making gasoline the alternative fuel in the country. Indian Currency is Asia’s worst performer so far in 2018, sliding 11%.

    1. Now with increasing oil import bill and unpaid sugarcane farmers, why JD(S)-Congress Karnataka government won't set an example like Brazil in India?
    2. Why the government is not thinking about the Economic Burden of Diabetes treatment by reducing the Sugar production and find alternates sustain the farmers economically?
