Ola begins taxi service at M'luru airport amid opposition by taxi drivers

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru Nov 24: After a long wait, Ola taxi service officially began from November 21 at Mangaluru international airport.

The long tussle between the Ola taxi drivers and airport taxi drivers has finally come to an end and Ola taxi drivers have gained upper hand in the battle. Supreme Court had given green signal to start app-based taxi service in country's ten international airports, based on which Mangaluru international airport authority had invited a tender in this regard.

Now, the Ola taxi service has acquired a tender for the next three years from November 19 and even the prepaid taxis at the airport have been given tender for three years to run their service at the Mangaluru international airport.

Speaking on the occasion, president of district Ola taxi drivers and owners association B K Imthiyaz said, “We are indeed happy that Ola got permit to start app-based taxi service at the airport. We have been permitted to begin service from November 21, but some airport taxi drivers are still opposing. On November 23, four passengers could not board our taxi. Passengers had booked Ola and our drivers had to wait for 40 minutes for the passengers. When driver phoned the passenger who booked the taxi had said that airport taxi drivers had taken them at fewer prices to their destination,"

“We have complained to Bajpe police station regarding this and we will fight until justice is provided,” added Imthiyaz.

President of district Ola association Sathyendra Shetty, vice-presidnet Munavar, Ola company legal advisor Kamaruddin, Ola company Mangaluru region officials Sujith Kundar,Gopla Krishna, Rakesh Kumar and others were present on the occasion.

It may be recalled that Ola and Uber taxi drivers were allegedly attacked by airport taxi drivers at the airport on November 7.

Riding Ola is safe because everything is recorded. Their fare is also reasonable. Police should protect Ola drivers in the best interest of passengers.

Ola Taxis are welcome, but regular bus services from airport to the city should also not be ignored for especially passengers with less luggage and to those travelling out of the district.

Trying to make quick money by overcharging the passengers is an old trick. So far, Mangalore citizens were little sensible in not budging to such demands by taxi drivers. However it is disappointing to see that some of the well to do passengers, especially those having petro dollars in their pocket, didn't mind getting cheated. Now it is time for common man in Mangalore to show to this unscrupulous taxi owners that they cannot be taken for a ride just like that. Otherwise, what is the sense in demanding 500/550 to travel from airport to Mangalore city? The argument that these tax drivers have to wait at airport for long duration etc. is stupid. No one gets paid without hard work.
Good luck Ola and Uber owners.

Prepaid taxis at the Mangalore air port are offer services at very competitive price and the drivers are not so bad, as they are accountable to the concerned authorities.

Welcome ola cannot service in Mangalore airport. Please start auto service also for the benifit if city's growing needs and teach a lesson to auto drivers who are looting the public. In Bangalore we depend on Ola service only ...ola us better than Uber in terms of charges.

I am regularly using ola services within Mangalore city limits and they are no so bad. Recently just few weeks back, from Bondel to PVS area, they charged me Rs. 90 and paid Rs. 100. I find ola taxi service, quite convenient for me.

Very happy to know the ola service has started,it should have started long ago .The district authority had turned blind eye to the fleecing of prepaid taxis.Rs 750 charged to a drop from airport to Hampankatta which is about 9 km.the monopoly had to come to an end finally it has.App based taxis are transparent and much cheaper compared to prepaid almost half the price. Thanks to Supreme court .
