Mangaluru, Nov 25: A gang of three thieves who entered a house in Ullal, in which the inmates of the house were not present, stole gold worth lacs of rupees. While escaping, one of the gang members was caught by the local public and beaten severely.

Shanmugham (40), a native of Tamil Nadu, is the thief who was caught by the public while making good his escape. He is admitted to a private hospital in Thokkottu as he has received serious injuries due to the beating of the public.

This theft took place on the night of Saturday, November 25 at Jaswil Manzil, house of late Mohammed of Halekote near here. The inmates of the house had been to a relative’s house to attend a family function. The thieves, who broke the lock of the house stole 17 sovereigns of gold and Rs 3.70 lac in cash that was kept in the cupboard.

The Ullal police who got the news that a thief is being beaten by the public rushed to the spot and took Shanmugham in custody and admitted him to the local hospital. Police are on the search for the other two thieves who have escaped with the gold and cash that was stolen from the house.

The owner of the house, Mohammed and his daughter Jamila had died one and a half months ago on the same day. A case regarding this theft is registered in the Ullal police station.
