Kundapur, Nov 26: A protest march was organized on Sunday, November 25, by the National Highway Awareness Committee against the collection of toll charges at Sasthan tollgate, which is going to start from Monday, November 26, as per the orders of the government.

Speaking on the occasion, Pratap Shetty, president of the committee said, "We have been protesting against the collection of toll charges at Sasthan since many years and our protest has given fruit. However, from Monday, November 26, the toll is going to be collected against our demand of not collecting toll charges from the local registration vehicles. So we request the police department to give us protection,"

Pratap Shetty also warned that if the toll charges are collected, then there will be severe protest against the same. Circle inspector K Srikant, station officer of Kota police station Narasimha Shetty, members of national highway awareness committee, Vittal Poojary, Achyutha Poojary, Chandra Mohan, Alwyn Andrade, Govind Poojary, Ravindra Thingalaya, Nagaraj Ganiga Saligrama, Sahadeva Poojary, Dinesh Ganiga, Suresh Poojary, Vijayakumar Shetty, Keshava Acharya, president of district truck owners' association Rajesh Kaveri and member of national highway law committee Shyamsundar Nayiri were present.

Unique protest

The members of the highway awareness committee who came by foot march and entered the Kota police station knelt down in front of the station officer and appealed for protection.

Furious protest if toll collected from local vehicles

The protesters gave a forewarning that they are going to hold a sit in protest if the toll is collected for vehicles bearing KA 20 registration.

Meeting after submitting appeal

The protesters conducted a meeting by the side of the national highway near the Kota police station after submitting the appeal and discussed the future preparations. Speaking in the meeting, Rajesh Kaveri, president of district truck owners' association said, "Our stance against the toll collection is the same. However, if the tollgate people start collecting toll from local vehicles in the coming days, we all will conduct a sit in protest in front of the toll gate."

The central govt ministers as well as State govt has to answer why even after 1 year of completion of NH work & building of toll booths on Mysore-Kozikode Mysore-Ooty Highway toll is not being collected at all. Is it becoz people of South Canara are weak & sober while those of bailuseeme are capable of setting toll booths on fire. The same hazardous Chamalapura flyash plant was shifted from here by Congis after protests & shifted to sober place of coast. People of South Canara awaken.

Toll collection at Sasthan or anywhere is crime and again crude method of collecting toll collection is another great sin. There is no need of collecting toll as we vehicle buyers are paying one time tax at the time of vehicle purchase.Even after that collecting tax means looting the public and should be termed as daylight robbery at the mercy of elected representatives and police department in order to get something from under the table. When they are getting their share of apple pie without any botheration respectfully, why the hell they have to break their head on this issue-for them it is petty issue.Even if NHAI or contractors want to collect toll, they have to first finish road works and then provide all the required basic facilities like service road, toilets and eateries outlets within the premise of toll collection centres. Now what they are doing is just harassing the vehicle owners by demanding the exorbitant toll charges.Concerned authorities, departments should interfere in this issue and resolve the problem amicably in the best interest of general public.Don't be so arrogant.Where there is a will, there is a way.Now what is happening is torturing the vehicle owners and looting the money.

    white color business.
why we paid road tax, when these builders are managing our roads.? it's govt's responsibility to make installment payment to these builders who manage and maintain roads.
isn't it double tax on common people ?
